Definitions
- the present invention concerns an arrangement for emptying containers on board a vessel, into a storage room, etc.
- the applicant's own Norwegian patent application no. 931493 describes a specially designed container for transporting cuttings or similar materials containing a liquid in which a side edge is used which extends inwards and which is designed to prevent splashing and thus spillage of liquid into the surroundings when the container is being transported.
- Drill cuttings and mud used to be transported in big bags or standard containers open at the top. Big bags were inexpedient and costly to use, while standard containers could seldom be used on account of spillage of liquid into the surroundings.
- the new type of containers described in the applicant's above patent application have been used widely and are used today extensively for the transportation of cuttings from drilling installations at sea to processing stations on shore.
- the containers are transported on supply ships to the shore and, where there are processing plants near the port where the supply ships dock, the containers are transported, by motor vehicle or by other means of transportation, directly to the processing plant, where the contents are emptied into a storage tank or similar.
- the containers are stored on shore (quay or similar) where they are landed and, when a sufficient quantity has been collected, they are subsequently emptied into the hold of a transport ship for transport to a processing plant.
- the present invention represents a solution which simplifies the emptying of the containers and which ensures that all the contents are evacuated.
- the present invention is characterised by a frame structure which is designed to be placed on the edge of a hatch on the vessel or the opening of a tank or storage room, etc.
- Each container is designed to be placed on the frame structure and to be rotated around a fulcrum on the frame structure to empty the container through an opening arranged in the centre of the frame, as stated in claim 1.
- Fig. 1 shows a sectional elevation of a vessel with a frame in accordance with the present invention, on which is placed a container,
- Fig. 2 shows the frame itself from above
- Fig. 3 shows the frame with the container, as shown in Fig. 1 , from the front,
- Fig. 4 shows an enlarged cross-section of part of the frame shown in Fig. 1 with a container being emptied.
- the frame 1 in accordance with the present invention is designed to be arranged in detachable fashion in connection with a hatch over a hold 2 on a vessel, as shown in Fig. 1 , or in connection with a storage tank or similar (not shown).
- the purpose of the frame is to achieve complete, safe, reliable emptying of containers 3 which are open at the top, for example of the type which is shown in the applicant's own Norwegian patent no. 931493.
- the containers 3 are designed to be placed on the frame 1 and to be swivelled (rotated) around a fulcrum 4, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 4.
- the frame 1 consists, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, of two parallel longitudinal girders 5 which are welded to or connected in some other way to transverse girders 6.
- two parallel angular support rails 7 with guide plates 8 welded to them are arranged on the transverse girders 6 by means of welding or screw connections.
- the support rails 7, the distance between which is equivalent to the width of the containers to be emptied, have the task of supporting the containers and guiding them into the correct position for emptying.
- the guide plates 8, which are diagonal, have the task of guiding each container into position between the support rails when the container is lowered into position.
- each container is designed to be tipped/rotated around a fulcrum 4, which comprises a rotation device 9.
- This rotation device 9 which is shown in further detail in Figs. 3 and 4, consists of a hooked plate 10, which is welded onto the transverse girder 6 at the inner end of the support rails 7, and a fulcrum pin 11 arranged in connection with the bottom of the container.
- the fulcrum pin can expediently be fastened to the container by means of through holes in the base girders 12 of the container.
- One 13 of the transverse girders serves as the stop girder during the emptying of the container 3.
- the stop girder 13 is, as shown in Fig. 4, arranged at a distance from the fulcrum 9, at the transverse girder 6, which is slightly less than the diagonal distance between one short end in the base and the other short end in the top of the container 3.
- An opening 20 has thus been formed in the frame between these girders where the container contents are designed to be emptied.
- diagonal guide plates 14 are arranged on the girders 5 at each end of the stop girder 13.
- the guide plates are designed to guide the container 3 against the stop girder. It is expedient also to arrange a grid 15 between the end girder 6 and the stop girder 13, as well as grids 16, 17 outside the support rails 7 on which it is possible to stand when attaching and removing lifting straps for the container during the emptying operation.
- the frame in accordance with the present invention is used as follows: it is placed on and if necessary fastened, by means of a clamp connection (not shown), to a hatch on a vessel, as shown in Fig. 1 , or over an opening in a store, tank, etc.
- a container to be emptied is placed on the support rails 7 using a crane or similar and is moved towards the fulcrum 9 until the fulcrum pin 11 engages with the hooked plate 10.
- the container can now be lifted at the opposite end using the same crane or similar via the lifting strap 18 (see Fig. 1 ) so that it rotates around the fulcrum 4.
- gravitational force will cause it to continue its rotational movement until it strikes the stop girder 13.
- the impact against the stop girder 13 causes the contents of the container to be loosened and to fall freely down into the hold of the vessel or into the tank/storage room on which the frame 1 has been placed.
- the container is rotated back to the initial position, i.e. on the support rails, using the crane, after which it is disengaged from the hooked plate 10, lifted right off the frame and replaced with a new container to be emptied.
