Definitions
- the invention relates to a method according to the preamble of patent claim 1.
- NMMO N-Methylmorpholine-N-oxide
- EP-A 0 553 070 Processes for producing cellulosic moldings from a solution of cellulose in a mixture of NMMO and water are disclosed, for example, in US Pat. No. 4,246,221 or in PCT-WO 93/19230. The cellulose solution is extruded from a spinneret, stretched in an air gap and precipitated from the solution in an aqueous precipitation bath.
- amine oxide process or “lyocell process”
- NMMO tertiary amine oxides which can dissolve cellulose.
- Fibers produced according to the amine oxide process are distinguished by a high fiber strength in both conditioned and wet condition, a high wet modulus and high loop strength.
- the cellulose is precipitated from the solution in an aqueous spinning bath.
- the spin bath accumulates in NMMO.
- the NMMO content in the process waters (eg wash waters) obtained from the spinning baths and at other points in the amine oxide process is up to 30% by weight.
- the solutions of the amine oxide mostly contain inorganic cations and anions such as Cations of sodium, calcium and magnesium or chloride, sulfate, etc., which partly derive from the pulp used in the process for the production of cellulosic molded articles and, on the other hand, from other substances used or formed in the process.
- these ions accumulate to concentrated aqueous solutions of the amine oxide which can be used again in the process and subsequently lead to precipitation and incrustations in the evaporation plant.
- Metal ions and metal particles which can also originate from the pulp used, but also from the abrasion of the metallic apparatus parts used in the process, accumulate in the solutions. It is known that these metallic particles in solutions of cellulose in aqueous amine oxides can often lead to violent degradation reactions of both the amine oxide and the cellulose.
- Dyes which originate, for example, from the degradation of compounds used in the amine oxide process to stabilize the cellulose solution, from accompanying substances of the pulp used and, in particular, from degradation reactions of the amine oxide used, likewise impair the implementation of the amine oxide process and in particular the quality of the cellulosic moldings produced by the process.
- organic anions in the solutions which originate, for example, from degradation reactions of the tertiary amine oxide and cellulose.
- biological impurities such as e.g. Bacteria, yeasts and fungi can form, which form wall coverings and clog pipes, among other things. can drive.
- the impurities can e.g. also hemicelluloses such as Trade pentosans that enter the NMMO cycle via the spinning bath. Pigments or other impurities from wash water and the spin bath can also be in the solution to be cleaned.
- turbidities is used both for colloidal turbidities and for other solid contaminants.
- PCT-WO 93/11287 proposes removing solids suspended in the solution from the solution before passing through an ion exchanger. This can be done by means of a filtration, whereby according to PCT-WO 93/11287 only a rough filtration is necessary.
- PCT-WO 97/07268 it is shown that a coarse filtration for separating the solid turbidities is insufficient.
- PCT-WO 97/07268 therefore proposes agglomeration of the turbid substances, in particular by means of a flocculant, and the subsequent removal of the turbid substances by means of a filtration.
- the aqueous solution obtained is then brought into contact with an ion exchanger.
- the service life is particularly relevant, which can be achieved when operating the filter units to separate the turbidity.
- the principle of flotation is known to be based on the adhesion of particles and agglomerates to gas bubbles in liquids.
- the particles adhering to the gas bubbles rise to the surface, where a foam cushion is formed. This foam pad can be peeled off the surface of the solution. If a flotation process is used to separate turbid substances from NMMO solutions to be purified from the amine oxide process, it has been shown that the turbid substances can be removed very effectively from the solution and thus the service lives of downstream units, e.g. of filtration units and ion exchangers can be significantly increased.
- a preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention consists in that the turbid substances and impurities are separated off by means of pressure relief flotation.
- other methods of flotation known to the person skilled in the art, for example flotation in agitator cells (with or without compressed air supply), flotation in compressed air cells (the air being supplied via porous walls), electroflotation or microflotation.
- a further preferred embodiment of the process according to the invention is characterized in that the turbidity and impurities are agglomerated before the flotation. This is preferably achieved by adding a flocculant to the aqueous solution before flotation.
- Suitable flocculants are e.g. the substances described in PCT-WO 97/07268 or bentonites or substance mixtures. These flocculants also act as collectors in the flotation process, i.e. as a flotation aid. The additional addition of flotation aids such as Foamers and regulators are usually not necessary.
- the aqueous solution can be subjected to filtration after flotation. Suitable methods and aggregates are e.g. in PCT-WO 97/07268.
- Substantial amounts of aqueous amine oxide may still be present in the flotate (the foam-like part of the solution which contains the agglomerated turbidity). In an advantageous embodiment of the method according to the invention, this is separated from the flotate and returned to the aqueous solution.
- the solution be further purified by means of adsorption and / or ion exchange. Procedures in this regard are e.g. described in EP 0 488 988 and in PCT-WO 95/23827.
- the process according to the invention is particularly suitable for working up process waters which are obtained in the amine oxide process. It is very important here, as described above, that the used NMMO solution is freed of all dissolved and undissolved impurities for reuse in the amine oxide process. With the use of a flotation process for the separation of cloudy substances, this is now possible in an even better way.
- the solution purified according to the process of the invention is therefore preferably returned to the process for the production of cellulosic moldings.
- air with the finest bubble size (30 ⁇ m to 50 ⁇ m) is introduced into the NMMO solution to be cleaned in a well-distributed manner.
- the turbid substances some of which e.g. are agglomerated by adding flocculants beforehand, stick to the air bubbles and rise to the surface of the liquid.
- a foam cushion forms on the surface with which the agglomerated turbidities can be removed and discharged as flotate.
- the NMMO contained in the flotate can e.g. can be recovered by centrifuging or pressing the flotate.
- flocculant strongly cationic (e.g. Praestol BC853, manufacturer: Fa.
- a contaminated NMMO aqueous solution derived from the amine oxide process was subjected to flotation according to the above conditions.
- the turbidity content (FTU-Formazin Turbidity Units) according to the measurement method described in PCT-WO 97/07268, the solids content (dry residue of a filtration over a 0.45 ⁇ m membrane) and the Filter value (grams of filtered solution after 3 minutes of filtration through a 0.45 ⁇ m membrane) was determined.
