Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a latching strip and a latching mechanism for windows or doors of the pivoting, swivelling or sliding type and especially those incorporating uPVC frame members and having latching/ locking components along one or more edges thereof.
  • windows or doors hereinafter referred to as sashes
  • Such windows or doors may be operated by an operating member either on the sash, or on a frame therefor, which activates, via a rack and pinion drive, one or more drive bolts provided with one or more latching members thereon to latch the sash in a closed position within its frame.

  • This position represents a closed position of the two strips which will then allow the two strips to be moved into locking engagement with each other by moving the first strip 1 under the control of the drive rod 3 , longitudinally relative to the second strip 5 to the position shown in Figure 4.

If the strips 1 and 5 are provided along the whole length of an edge face of the sash S and frame F, therefore, respectively, multi-point latching along the whole edge face of the sash S is provided. It may be, however, that because of the operating mechanism for the sash S, this is not possible and it may be necessary to provide two separate strips 1, one to either side of the operating mechanism for the sash S.
  • the strips 1 and 5 may be formed of any material sufficiently strong to withstand forces applied to the window sash S which occur when attempts are made to force open the window. While metal strips will be perfectly satisfactory, it is preferred that a material which does not rust is used for each strip.
  • the first strip 1 need not be U-shaped but must merely have hook-shaped members thereon which are engageable with appropriately spaced keeps, and that these are preferably provided by apertures in the second strip 5, so that the first strip 1 can then be caused to engage with the second strip 5 once the two strips 1 and 5 have been moved longitudinally relative to one another. It is, however, preferred that two identical U-shaped strips are provided since these provide maximum flexibility for fitting to the window sash S and frame F therefor respectively and also provide maximum strength and durability.
