- the process can be carried out using either a low shear mixer/fluid bed combination or a fluid bed which can be batch or continuous.
- the mixture of powder and liquid oil is mixed in a low shear mixer, the liquid oil with and/or without lecithin or other emulsifier being sprayed onto the powder in or entering the mixer.
- a low shear mixer may be of any suitable type such as a drum type, tote blenders, to slow speed ribbon or paddle type.
- a low shear mixer is typically any mixer that does not substantially physically damage the powder.
- the specific type and speed of the mixer may be selected to suit the strength of the powder being used.
- the fluidised bed may comprise a vessel having an air distribution grate at a lower end thereof.
- One or more filters may be positioned at an upper end of the vessel to filter out entrained solids.
- Nozzles for spraying atomised liquids, typically water, may be positioned in, on, or adjacent to, the vessel, for example in the sides of or top of the vessel . Air enters through the distribution plate to fluidise the powder and the exhaust air passes through the filter section to the outside of the operating area.

- guar gum is added as shown schematically by arrow A, in powder form to a low shear mixer 1 comprising an open top vessel 2 having mixing blades or paddles 4 located therein.
- the blades are mounted on a driving shaft 6 which is rotated by motor means 8 so that the blades move slowly.
- any suitable low shear mixer may be used, for example a ribbon or screw mixing means may be used instead of blades 4 and shaft 6.
- liquid oil and lecithin is added typically while the blades are moving. This is illustrated by arrow B.
- the powder is coated to slow down subsequent agglomeration by creating a water barrier to minimise the normally hygroscopic nature of the powder.
- the resultant product is output via a suitable outlet 10 on the vessel Z, as shown by arrow C.
- This pre-treated powder 12 is then added to a batch fluid bed as shown in Figure 2 and at a variety of temperatures between 0°C and 120°C further liquid, normally water, is sprayed, via nozzles 16 located in or on the vessel 14, onto the powder to create a granule. Further drying may be required to reduce this added moisture to an acceptable level .

- the base of the vessel 14 comprises a mesh plate 18 and the vessel is connected to an air supply or fan 20 so that, in use, air passes up through the mesh plates, through the mixture and out through filters 22 located at the top of the vessel 14.
