Definitions
- the invention relates to adhesive label sections, in particular for environmentally friendly labeling of plastic containers and a method for environmentally friendly labeling and de-labeling of plastic containers, in particular containers made of PET (polyethylene terephthalate), PEN (polyethylene naphthalate) or PC ( Polycarbonate), using water-soluble adhesives for the labels.
- PET polyethylene terephthalate
- PEN polyethylene naphthalate
- PC Polycarbonate
- the known method is disadvantageous in that the containers to be labeled have to be treated in a water bath, which requires a high water consumption and 97/43744 PC17EP97 / 02406
- the amount of dissolved label and adhesive mass means a high consumption of water and disposal capacity.
- Labeling and de-labeling of plastic containers is ideally adapted.
- label sections which are characterized in that they consist of a water-insoluble single or multi-layer plastic film which on its adhesive side, i.e. on their side to be bonded, completely or partially with a dry layer of an adhesive from the group consisting of polyvinyl alcohols, polyvinyl acetates or another water-soluble adhesive based on starch, cellulose, glucose and / or dextrin, which are coated the pressing of the label section can be activated by moistening with water and, after the adhesive layer has dried, allows the label section to be removed practically without residue from the outside of the container.
- an adhesive from the group consisting of polyvinyl alcohols, polyvinyl acetates or another water-soluble adhesive based on starch, cellulose, glucose and / or dextrin
- the adhesive should be coated in the form of edge strips that run in the area of the edge of the label section.
- Polyolefins in particular polyethylene, polypropylene or blends or copolymers of these polyolefins, are preferably suitable as film material for the label sections.
- the thickness of the film material is preferably between 15 and 100 ⁇ m, while the thickness of the adhesive layer should be between 10 and 50 ⁇ m.
- the solution temperature of the adhesive layer should be between 0 ° C and 30 ° C.
- the length of the label section is greater than the circumferential length of the container to be labeled; the resulting overlap area of the label section must be kept free of water-soluble adhesive.
- a water-soluble adhesive from the group consisting of polyvinyl alcohols, polyvinyl acetate or another water-soluble adhesive based on starch, cellulose, glucose and / or dextrin,
- a water-insoluble label section is therefore used.
- the adhesive used to adhere the label section to the outside of the container is first activated, ie, substantially moistened, so that the label section adheres to the outside of the container with high adhesive force. After the adhesive has dried out, this adhesive force drops, but experience has shown that it is high enough to hold the label section on the filled container, which expands somewhat after filling. to adhere sufficiently. If the container is empty, the label section can be removed dry by cutting and pulling it off.
- a label section corresponding to a print repeat is preferably cut to length from a printed plastic film web.
- the label section can optionally already be coated with a water-soluble adhesive from the group of polyvinyl alcohols, polyvinyl acetates or another water-soluble adhesive based on starch, cellulose, glucose and / or dextrin. However, coating can also be carried out subsequently.
- the adhesive layer is activated with water or steam. The drying and de-labeling then take place in the manner already described.
- a label edge is glued to the outside of the container, the container is rotated with slower tracking of the label section, so that the label section is stretched to the limit of reversibility and at the same time stretched to the container - Is glued on the outside and adheres there, this adhesive process being followed by delayed retraction of the stretching of the plastic film and aging of the adhesive as well as de-labeling after use phase in the dry state of the adhesive layer.
- the label sections can preferably consist of polyolefins, in particular polypropylene or polyethylene, or their copolymers or copolymers.
- the material can also be vapor permeable.
- Stretchable films in particular consist of elastic materials, preferably of styrene-butadiene block copolymers.
- the film material can also be made partly from elastic polyolefins produced using metallocene catalysts, these polyolefins should make up more than 50% by weight of the total mass.
- the duration of the retarded regression of the label section to the original length should be between 90 msec and several minutes.
- the nature of the adhesive layer on the inside of the label is particularly important. In order to obtain a product that can function on the usual labeling machines with adhesive layers on the inside of the label section, it must be ensured that there is a defined, low friction of the adhesive layer against the cutting drum of the labeling machine and that the adjustment is made the adhesive layer guarantees a defined, permanent adhesion between the label section and the container, so that the label section is prevented from moving when it is used and when the circumference of the container is changed, and on the other hand the label section can still be pulled off during the de-labeling process.
- the de-labeling is usually carried out by cutting the label section and removing it dry with brushes or scrapers.
- the label material accordingly has a layer adhering well to the container.
- This on the inside of the label The layer lying on the surface can be applied by coextrusion, printing, lacquering or similar processes known per se.
- the coating can take place over the entire surface or partially. For example, only the edge areas of the label section can be coated with edge strips.
- a high level of adhesion of the adhesive layer is only triggered by activation and moistening of the adhesive by a small amount of water or steam.
- suitable adhesives are those which are produced on the basis of polyvinyl alcohol. After the liquid phase has dried, the stickiness largely disappears again.
- the label sections are glued to the adhesive layer by moistening them, for example by spraying with water, or by placing them on a moistened container surface, in which case the adhesive force (adhesion) between the label film and the material of the container is very high is. After drying, i.e. after the water has evaporated, the adhesion of the water-soluble adhesive has decreased significantly, but is still sufficient to control the observed expansion and shrinking movements of the container and to hold the label section in the original position on the container.
- recycling-compatible sealing lacquers or hotmelts are also used, which result in a high bonding force between the superimposed label areas immediately after the application process.
- the overlapping label edges can be welded using a stamp.
- Polyvinyl alcohols are prepared via polymer-analogous reactions by alkaline-catalyzed transesterification of polyvinyl acetates with alcohols (preferably methanol) in solution. They have degrees of polymerization in the range from 500 to 2,500, which corresponds to molecular weights of 20,000 to 100,000 g / mol. speaks. Corresponding to their degrees of hydrolyzation of 98 to 99 and 87 to 89 mol%, respectively, they are partially saponified polyvinyl acetates with a residual acetyl group content of 1 to 2%. Depending on their degree of hydrolysis, they are soluble in water and in a few, strongly polar organic solvents such as formamide, dimethylformamide or dimethyl sulfoxide.
- alcohols preferably methanol
- polyvinyl alcohols are so toxicologically safe that residues are readily taken up in the washing water of the PET containers, so that toxicologically dangerous contact cannot take place at any time during the washing and rinsing process before filling.
- the polyvinyl acetates related to polyvinyl alcohols are substances which can be prepared by intramolecular partial acetalization of polyvinyl alcohols with generally short-chain, aliphatic aldehydes. Polyvinyl acetate can be easily crosslinked via the existing hydroxide groups. Without treatment with formaldehyde, polyvinyl acetates are also water-soluble and can therefore serve the same purpose as polyvinyl alcohols.
- the invention also relates to the labeled container made of plastic, which is characterized in that the label section consists of a plastic film which adheres to the outside of the container by means of a layer which in the dried state permits de-labeling.
- the label sections are usually used as so-called wrap-around labels, in which the label overlaps at its edges and these edges are glued or sealed to one another in the overlap area. Of course, no water-activatable adhesives are used for gluing and sealing these edges.
- a process for wrap-around labeling of cylindrical or prismatic containers, for example made of PET or PEN, is divided into the following process steps:
- Label section of a printed plastic film web which carries on its inside a layer of a water-soluble, in the dissolved state sticking polyvinyl alcohol and / or polyvinyl acetate or another adhesive of the type mentioned, which is activated, preferably dissolved and mediates adhesion between the back of the label section and the container,
- the adhesion between the back of the label section and the outside of the container is just sufficient for the label section to consist of a thin plastic film, the thickness of which is approximately 10 to 30 ⁇ m, when the plastic container is stretched and contracted to hold without the label section falling. Nevertheless, the label section with the dried adhesive can be cut in with the aid of cutting / de-labeling devices and like a cut one Cuff can be detached from the container as a whole. Invisible, remaining residues of polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl acetate or other adhesives of the type mentioned are completely removed in the subsequent washing process of the container and can remain in the wash liquor since they are not toxic.
- Label films can preferably consist of polyolefins, polypropylene or polyethylene, but can also be made of paper, paper-plastic laminates and the like.
- the adhesive layer lying on the inside of the label material can be applied by coextrusion, printing, lacquering or similar methods known per se.
- the coating can take place over the entire surface or partially.
- a film 1 pigmented white with titanium dioxide and made of higher density polyethylene with a thickness of 50 ⁇ m is printed on the outside and overlaid with an abrasion-resistant lacquer 3.
- the density of the polyethylene is preferably in the range from 0.930 to 0.965 g / cm 3.
- the rear side 4 of a section of label cut to length from the film 1 is partially coated with an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol, so that an adhesive layer 2 results after drying.
- polyvinyl Oil alcohol used with a degree of hydrolysis of 73 to 100%, preferably 80 to 90%.
- the ester number of the polyvinyl alcohol according to DIN 53401 is 0 to 270, preferably 120 to 160 mg KOH / g.
- the viscosity of a 4% aqueous solution at 20 ° C according to DIN 53015 is 3 to 40 mPa x s.
- Label sections produced in this way are used for labeling 1 1 polyester bottles.
- a transparent polypropylene film in a thickness of 40 ⁇ m was printed by reverse printing. Additional strips of polyvinyl acetate dispersion were attached to the printing area.
- Polyvinyl acetate homopolymers or copolymers can be used.
- a polyvinyl acetate homopolymer with an average molecular weight and with a viscosity of the 50% solution at 23 ° C. of 14,000 to 24,000 mPas was used.
- the back of a label film made of polypropylene was coated with an adhesive aqueous dextrin solution with a syrup-like consistency.
- the application weight (based on dried dextrin) was 0.2-0.5 g / m 2 .
- the label section was high Adhesion on a PET bottle. " It was attached to this PET bottle.
- a label film according to Example 1 or 2 was coated with an aqueous solution of methyl cellulose in strips.
- the coating was carried out with an application weight (based on the dried methyl cellulose) of 0.1-0.5 g / m 2 .
- the coating was applied in strips to an area of 20-50% of the film area. Label sections were attached to PEN containers. After the label section had been dried again, the adhesive force was lower, so that a dry de-labeling process according to Example 3 could also be used here. De-labeling without visible residues was possible.
