Definitions
- the present invention relates to a bundle tie com ⁇ prising an elongate band member, a locking head which is connected to one end of the band member and which has a throughgoing slit having a bottom portion of essentially the same width and the same height as the band member, and a mouth portion tapering towards the bottom portion, and cooperating locking teeth arranged on the band member and in the bottom portion.
- Bundle ties of this type are known from e.g. SE 367,803 and US-3, 837,047. These prior-art bundle ties have a band member with a specially designed outer band end of the elongate band member. This band end must first be inserted into the slit transversely of the longitudi ⁇ nal direction of the band member, thereby making it pos- sible to pass the interior part of the band member in its longitudinal direction through the slit.
- the object of the present invention is to provide a bundle tie, which permits easy connection of the band member and the locking head in an arbitrary longitudinal position along the band member.
- the band member and the locking head can be interconnected in an arbitrary position. More specifically, this can take place by the flap, by lateral resilience, allowing inser ⁇ tion of the band member in the entire width thereof, i.e. essentially without rotating the band member, through the mouth portion of the slit to the bottom portion of the slit. The band member is then retained in the bottom por ⁇ tion by the flap springing back.
- the locking head has a flap on each side of the mouth portion of the slit.
- the flap or each flap can be attached in the locking head either at a distance above the bottom portion or es ⁇ sentially on the same level as the bottom portion.
- the resilience of the flap or each flap can be ac ⁇ complished by making the flap flexible and attaching it essentially rigidly in the locking head or vice versa by the flap being made essentially rigid and being attached essentially resiliently in the locking head, or by a com ⁇ bination of these two alternatives.
- the flap or each flap makes, at least at its free end, an acute angle with the longitudinal direc ⁇ tion of a portion of the band member, inserted into the bottom portion, namely in such a manner that the coope ⁇ ration of the locking teeth is reinforced when trying to pull out the band member through the bottom portion.
- the locking head can have a relatively rigid side wall, to which the flap is attached.
- Figs 1, 2 and 3 are a plan view, a cross-section taken along line II-II in Fig. 1 and a longitudinal sec ⁇ tion taken along line III-III in Fig. 1 of a first embo ⁇ diment of a bundle tie according to the present inven- tion,
- Figs 4, 5 and 6 are a plan view, a front view and a longitudinal section along line VI-VI in Fig. 4 of a second embodiment of a bundle tie according to the pre ⁇ sent invention, and
- Figs 7, 8 and 9 are a plan view, a cross-section along line VIII-VIII in Fig. 7 and a cross-section along line IX-IX in Fig. 7.
- the embodiment of a bundle tie according to the pre ⁇ sent invention shown in Figs 1-3 comprises a band member 1 and a locking head 2 which is fixedly connected to an inner end 3 of the band member 1.
- the band member 1 is of essentially the same cross- section from the end 3 to its free end 4 and is, along essentially its entire length, provided with locking teeth 5 on its one broad side. Thus, its width is greater than its height.
- the locking head 2 has a bottom wall 6, two side walls 7, 8 which are perpendicularly connected thereto and which are parallel to each other, and two reinforcing strips 9, 10 each connected to one of the side walls 7, 8 and extending perpendicular therefrom as well as from the bottom wall 6 and also away from one another.
- the side walls 7, 8 are thus almost rigidly connected to the bot ⁇ tom wall 6.
- Locking flaps 13, 14 are fixed inwardly of the legs 11, 12 and at a distance from the bottom wall 6 at the connecting area between each side wall 7, 8 and the neighbouring reinforcing strip 9, 10.
- Each locking flap 13, 14 is of rectangular cross-section. They extend from their points of attachment towards each other and towards the bottom wall 6 and their longitudinal axes make an acute angle with the plane of the bottom wall 6.
- the bot ⁇ tom wall 6 terminates in a pointed end inside the free ends of the flaps 13, 14 seen in the direction of the inner end 3 of the band member 1.
- the locking head 2 has a throughgoing slit with a mouth portion 15, which is defined by the side wall 7 and the flap 13 on one side and the side wall 8 and the flap 14 on the other side, and with a bottom portion 16, which in the depth of the slit is defined between the bottom wall 6 and the free ends of the flaps 13, 14 and in the lateral direction of the flap is defined between the side walls 7 and 8.
- the mouth portion 15 of the slit tapers in depth and, more specifically, from a width which is greater than the width of the band member 1, to a width which is smaller than the width of the band member 1, adjacent to the bottom portion 16.
- the bottom portion 16 has a width which is essentially equal to the width of the band mem- ber 1, and a height which is essentially equal to the thickness of the band member 1.
- the flaps 13, 14 are relatively rigid but flexibly attached in the locking head 2. If the band member 1 is formed to a loop, an arbitrary portion of the band member 1 can thus be pressed into the mouth portion 15 between the flaps 13, 14 which then resiliently move away from one another, such that the involved portion of the band member 1 enters the bottom portion 16 essentially without rotation, the flaps 13, 14 springing back to their posi- tions shown in Figs 1-3.
- the locking teeth 5 on the band member 1 will come into engagement with the corresponding locking teeth 17 on the free ends of the flaps 13, 14, such that the band member 1 can only be passed on through the bottom portion 16 in that direction which makes the loop smaller.
- the second embodiment of a bundle tie according to the present invention as shown in Figs 4-6 comprises a band member 101, which is identical with the band member 1 except for a short portion having an increased width adjacent to its free end 104.
- the band member 101 also projects from a lock- ing head 102 perpendicular to a bottom portion 116 of a throughgoing slit in the locking head 102.
- the locking head 102 has a bottom wall 106 and two side walls 107, 108.
- Each side wall 107, 108 is elongated away from the inner end 103 of the band member 101 by means of a flap 113, 114, respectively.
- the flaps 113, 114 are plate-shaped and extend towards one another in their parts closest to the bottom wall 106, thereby forming a mouth portion 115 of a slit between the side wall 107 and the flap 113 on one side and the side wall 108 and the flap 114 on the other side.
- a bottom portion 116 of the same slit is formed between the side walls 107, 108 in the lateral direction and between the bottom wall 106 and the lower edges of the flaps 113, 114 in the depth of the slit.
- the slit 115, 116 is of essentially the same cross-section as the slit 15, 16 in Figs 1-3.
- the locking teeth 117 of the bottom portion 116 are, in this second embodiment of the invention, arranged on the bottom wall 106 in the bottom portion 116. More specifically, they are arranged on the outermost part of a cantilever resilient tongue 118 which thus constitutes part of the bottom wall 106.
- the bundle tie in Figs 4-6 can be formed to a loop in the same manner as the bundle tie in Figs 1-3, and the band member 101 can also directly and essentially without rotation be fixed in an arbitrary position in the locking head 102, the flaps 113 and 114 springing away so as then to spring back to the positions shown in Figs 4-6 when the band member 101 has come down completely into the bottom portion 116, where the locking teeth 105 mesh with the locking teeth 117.
- the free end 104 of the band member 101 can, thanks to the wider portion, also be temporarily hooked up adjacent to the locking head 102 before the actual locking of the band member 101 to the locking head 102.
- the third embodiment of a bundle tie according to the present invention as shown in Figs 7-9 differs from the first and second embodiment by the flaps 213, 214 including the side walls 207, 208, which are flexibly attached to the bottom wall 206, i.e. on the same level as a bottom portion 216 of a throughgoing slit.
- a mouth portion 215 of the same slit is defined merely by the flaps 213, 214, which extend down towards the bottom wall 206 and towards each other.
- the bottom portion 216 is in turn defined between the bottom wall 206 and the lower free ends of the flaps 213, 214, which in this case are of rectangular cross-section.
- the locking teeth 217 are here arranged on a tongue 218, which constitutes part of the bottom wall 206, for cooperation with the locking teeth 205 of the band member 201.
- the band member 201 comprises two edge flanges 221, 222 on the side opposite to the locking teeth 205, said flanges being adapted to engage in grooves 223, 224 which are formed between the flap 213, 214 and the side wall 207, 208.
