- the present invention relates to a method of protecting internal combustion engines.
- Another cause of degradation of the surfaces of the engine is due to the oxidation, sometimes selective, of the constituent metals of the alloys used, this is why another object of the present invention is to provide an additive which makes it possible to reduce the phenomena of oxidation on the surface of parts brought into contact with the combustion gases of a hydrocarbon fuel.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide an additive of the above type which makes it possible to lighten the specifications weighing on the alloys constituting the moving parts of the engines.
- an additive containing at least one Cerium compound for the protection of engines against wear and oxidation which compound is chosen to so that it is soluble or pseudo-soluble in liquid hydrocarbons and introduced into the fuel supplying the internal combustion engine at a concentration so as to form a solution, a sol, a suspension or an emulsion of a compound of Cerium and this at a concentration such that cerium is present in the said fuel at a concentration at least equal to 5, preferably 10 PPM (by mass).
- pseudo-soiuble refers to suspensions or emulsions which, although not constituting solutions in the strict sense of the term, have sufficient stability in hydrocarbons that during the use of a full tank under conditions normal, no significant change in sensation or suspension takes place.
- the concentration of Cerium in the fuel is between 10 and 500, preferably from 50 to 200 parts per million (by mass).
- cerium III salts it is conceivable to obtain good protections from solutions of cerium III salts provided that the latter are stable in conventional fuels and in particular conventional gas oils. If one does not master the form in which they are shortly after their introduction into the fuel generally diesel, it is preferable to add the cerium compound at the last moment or in an extemporaneous manner.
