Description
Panel
The invention relates to a panel that comprises a surface layer made of stone material, a pressure resistant support layer mounted with glue substance on one surface of the surface layer and a tension resistant surface layer mounted with glue substance on the surface of the support layer.
Panels of this kind are nowadays well known and used in both outdoor and indoor installations. An example of a known solution is a panel where a surface layer made of stone is mounted onto one surface of a pressure resistant honeycomb structure made of aluminium. A tension resistant layer made of fibreglass material is then mounted onto the surface of the honeycomb structure.
A disadvantage of the above known solution is its high cost because the production costs of a honeycomb structure made of aluminium are high. Approaches are also known in the field in which the honeycomb structure is made of plastic material . The disadvantage of these solutions is also their comparatively high production costs.
It is the object of the invention to provide a panel with which the drawbacks of the prior art can be eliminated. This is achieved with the panel of the invention that is characterized in that the pressure resistant support layer is made of wood material that is arranged in such a manner that the grain is essentially perpendicular to the plane of the layer made of stone material .
An advantage of the invention over the prior art is primarily its low production costs because much less energy is needed for producing the panel of the invention in comparison to the aluminium solution.
Another advantage is that the panel is environmentally friendly, which is highly significant today. Still another advantage is the light weight of the panel that widens the range of its usability. Furthermore, it is to be noted that light weight is achieved without using any expensive technique, for example, formerly the aeronautical industry used a very expensive honeycomb technique. A further advantage is that it can be used for various purposes as the panel of the invention meets very high quality and fire proofing requirements. The panel of the invention can be used for example in ships that have extremely high quality standards. The invention also has the advantage that its mounting properties are very good as the panel can be equipped with fastenings for mounting the panel onto its base, if needed.
In the following, the invention will be described in more detail by means of a preferred embodiment shown in the attached drawing in which the drawing figure represents a schematic sectional view of the panel of the invention.
In the figure the reference numeral 1 denotes a surface layer made of stone material . The reference numeral 2 denotes generally a support layer that is pressure resistant. The pressure resistant support layer 2 is mounted with glue substance on one surface of the surface layer made of stone material. The glue substance is applied in such a way that the layers are fastened together over their entire surface. The surface of the support layer 2 facing away from the stone layer 1 is provided with a tension resistant surface layer 3 by using glue substance. Said tension resistant layer 3 can, for example, be made of fibreglass material, metal or any such material. This glue substance is also
applied in such a way that the layers are fastened together over their entire surface.
It is an essential idea of the invention that the pressure resistant support layer 2 is made of wood material that is arranged in such a manner that the grain is essentially perpendicular to the plane of the layer 1 made of stone material . In this connection the term wood material refers specifically to natural wood. A highly pressure resistant structure with a good dimensional stability is achieved by mounting the grain of wood material perpendicular to the plane of layer 1 made of stone material. The panel of the invention does not absorb water which widens the range of its usability. The panel of the invention meets even the requirements on ships because of its highly advantageous fire proofing properties. The panel of the invention is also shock resistant which makes it very suitable for use in lifts. Shock resistance means that the layer of wood material supports the layer of stone material so well that an essentially spotlike shock, such as a kick, will not make the stone material crack very easily and if the shock is hard enough and the stone material cracks, the pieces will remain on the support layer without falling off . The above mentioned points have a direct bearing on safety issues.
The pressure resistant support layer 2 can most preferably be made of pieces of wood 2a fixed adjacent to each other. The mounting of the pieces of wood 2a can be made by shaping the pieces of wood 2a to match each other and by fastening them together so that the grain of the pieces is in a perpendicular direction to the layer 1 made of stone material. This solution is shown in the figure. The shaping of the pieces of wood 2a can be made quite freely, but it is essential that the shapes are of a kind that can be tightly fastened
adjacent to each other. Naturally, it is quite possible to have one single piece of wood to form a pressure resistant layer, etc.
The pressure resistant layer can be made of any suitable wood material. Balsa wood has given very good results. The advantage of balsa wood is its light weight and easy machining so that a good final result is reached with advantage. Aspen can be mentioned as an example of other wood materials that can be used. The embodiment above is in no way intended to restrict the invention but the invention can vary within the scope of the claims quite freely. Therefore, it is evident that the panel of the invention or its details need not be similar to the ones shown in the figure but other arrangements are also possible. The layer made of stone material can naturally be cut from raw material in any suitable way, the dimensions can be chosen as required, etc. The stone material can be any stone, for example, granite, marble, etc. The pressure resistant layer can also be dimensioned quite freely with regard to the situation in question. It is clear that the panel of the invention can be rectangular but the shape of the panel can always be chosen in accordance with the situation. The glue substance can be any suitable glue or any such substance that secures sufficient fastening. The panel can be put together by any suitable known technique, or by using any way of applying the glue substance and different pressing methods.
