Definitions
- the invention relates to a device for a crash barrier post, preferably of concrete or a plastic material, comprising an elongated main portion having a lower end for direct insertion into the ground or a base and an upper end for the mounting of a crash barrier rail or similar.
- the aforementioned crash barrier post is equipped with a plurality of bosses at the upper end for receiving one or more crash barrier rails, said bosses being designed to be placed in the concave profile of the crash barrier rail. Bosses of this kind serve to provide a good contact face for the crash barrier rail and hold the rail in place in a more secure manner on collision of a motor vehicle, such that it is not so easily ripped off, the bosses preventing movement of the crash barrier rail along the crash barrier post.
- the cracking of the post from the. crash barrier rail anchor bolt to the top of the post is also prevented as the bosses will form a crack barrier.
- US Patent No. 5,219,241 makes known a crash barrier post of the first-mentioned type. It is equipped with two bosses which are designed so as to be complementary to the profile of the crash barrier rail. The bosses have the same cross- sectional profile along their entire extent transverse to the longitudinal extent of the crash barrier post.
- This crash barrier post is suitable solely for flat stretches of road with a gradient of less than 4 - 7°, as substantial angular deviations between the post and the crash barrier rail are not tolerated. If an attempt is made to mou ⁇ _ a crash barrier rail on the post in slopes having a gradient, of more than 4 - 7°, the rail will not be capable of being laid in proper contact with the bosses, but will only touch the bosses at certain points.
- Figure 1 is a front view of a crash barrier post
- Figure 2 is a lateral view of the crash barrier post of
- Figures 1 and 2 illustrate a crash barrier post 1 having an upper end 2 and a lower end 3.
- the post is equipped with two bosses 4 which serve as a rest for a crash barrier rail 5.
- the post 1 is provided with a groove 8 for applying a heat-shrinkable reflector band.
- the post is preferably made of concrete or plastic and, in the first embodiment, is solid.
- the bosses are double-curved and constitute preferably about a third of a spherical shell.
- the crash barrier rail may then be turned unhindered about the anchor bolt 7 to the desired angle which corresponds to the gradient of the slope at that point. In practice, it will not be relevant to have an angular deviation of more than 15 - 20° from the horizontal. Even with an angular deviation of this size, the crash barrier rail 5 will make good contact with the bosses 4.
- Figure 1 shows an embodiment with two bosses on the same side, but bosses can, of course, also be provided on the opposite side too, for example for use on a motorway. More than two bosses on the same side may also be a possibility. _r is also possible to use just one boss, but this will nc_ provide adequate protection on most roads.
