Description

A TOOL FOR REMOVING A VEHICLE TYRE AIR VALVE INSERT
Technical Field
This invention relates to a tool for removing an in¬ sert of an air valve for a vehicle tyre, the tool compri¬ sing a rod, which is provided with means at its end for engaging the valve insert, and a tube or cup thereon, which covers the air valve and is provided with outlets for the escape of air under pressure. Technical Background
A normal air valve for a vehicle tyre comprises a tube-like body and an insert threaded therein. The insert constitutes the valve itself, which may be mechanically opened by depressing a small movable pin thereof.
However, when the tyre is to be completely emptied, for example when it is to be replaced in a workshop, it is usual in order to speed up the emptying process to remove the insert and allow the pressurized air in the tyre to freely escape.
US-A-3 861 249 shows a tool of the above mentioned type for removing a tyre valve insert. This tool comprises in essence a pin for operating the valve insert and a cup fixed thereon; this cup covers the valve and is provided with holes at its periphery for free escape of the air in a direction where it will not hit the operator.
It is a well known fact in the trade that the escape of the air from a tyre, especially a truck or bus tyre or the like, is extremely noisy and can cause harm to the ope¬ rators in the workshop.
The object of the invention is to accomplish a tool of the above mentioned type, which has clear advantages over the tool of the prior art. The Invention
This is accomplished in that the outlets are provided with sound dampening means, whereby the sound is brought down to an acceptable level without unduly increasing the air escape time. Preferably, the tube is provided with a sound dampening sleeve over the outlets in the form of holes.
The removal of the insert may be quite dangerous, especially if the tyre pressure is very high, which is the case for truck and bus tyres. If removed, without the above mentioned tool, the insert can fly out of the air valve to¬ gether with possible contaminants, such as sand particles and the like, in the tyre. Also with the tool the removal of the valve insert may be difficult to accomplish without danger due to the high pressure.
A far better solution is according to the invention obtained in that the tube has means for its attachment to the air valve and in that the rod is axially and rota- tionally movable relative to the tube By its two-part configuration, the tube of this tool can be attached, preferably threaded, to the air valve, which provides an improved safety. Thereupon the rod may be operated to engage the insert and unscrew it from the air valve. The insert and possible contaminants in the tyre will be caught by the tube irrespective of the tyre pres¬ sure, and the air can be allowed to escape through the peripheral holes and the sound dampening sleeve without any necessity for the operator to hold the tool against the valve. The Drawing
The invention will be described in further detail be¬ low reference being made to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig 1 is a side view, partly in section, of a tool according to the invention, and Fig 2 is an end view of this tool from the right in Fig 1. Detailed Description of a Preferred Embodiment A tool according to the invention for removing an in¬ sert of an air valve for a vehicle tyre comprises two parts, which are axially and rotationally movable in rela- tion to each other, namely a tube 1 and a rod 2.
The tube 1 is towards its open end to the left in Fig
1 provided with an internal thread 3 for attachment of the tool to an air valve (not shown) of a vehicle tyre. At its opposite end the tube 1 has an end wall 4 with a central bore, through which the rod 2 extends.
At its end extending out from the tube 1 the rod 2 is provided with a knob 5. The opposite free end 6 of the rod
2 is fork-shaped for engagement with an insert (not shown) of the air valve. The rod 2 is provided with a flange 7 and may hereby only move axially within the limits set by the thread 3 and the end wall 4.
The tube 1 is provided with a number of circumferen¬ tial holes 8 for the escape of air from the tube 1. A sound dampening sleeve 9 is arranged on the tube 1 covering the holes 8. There is a circumferential slot between the tube 1 and the sleeve 9 at the holes 8 for the purpose of distri¬ buting air streaming through the holes 8 over the entire area of the sound dampening sleeve 9.
By proper choice of sound dampening material in the sleeve 9, for example sintered brass or the like, the sound dampening may be very effective without any substantial in¬ crease in the total time for emptying a tyre, which may be in the order of 1 minutes for decreasing the pressure from some 7 kp/cm2 to some 2 kp/cm . The knob 5 may, as especially appears from Fig 2, be provided with a recess 10 having tapering side walls, one of which may additionally be provided with teeth. The pur¬ pose of this recess 10 is to function as a means for remo¬ ving an air valve cap (not shown), before the tool is used for removing the valve insert. The function of the tool should be clear from the de¬ scription above: The air valve cap is removed by means of the recess 10, whereupon the tool is turned around and attached to the valve by means of the thread 3 in the tube 1. The knob 5 is used to engage the rod end 6 with the valve insert and release the same from the air valve by unscrewing it. The tool may then be released until the air from the tyre has escaped through the holes 8 and the sound dampening sleeve 9. It may then be unscrewed from the air valve, whereupon the valve insert may be recovered.
It appears that the tool according to the invention provides at least four distinct advantages: it effectively dampens the noise from the air escape, it gives ease of operation and safety in that the valve insert is unscrewed within the enclosed tube of the tool, it provides a means for unscrewing the cap of the air valve, and it can be used for again mounting the valve insert in the air valve.
