Definitions

  • the invention relates to an insulating batt comprising mineral fibres which are bonded together by means of a binder to form a coherent porous sheet which is entirely or partially encased in an air-permeable casing.
  • Such insulating batts which are described in i.a. DK patent appli ⁇ cation No. 0267/92 and international patent application No. PCT/DK92/00223, are used for e.g. the insulation of ceilings and roofs.
  • the batts are usually available in predetermined widths, e.g. in 10-cm-interval widths starting from 50 cm and ending at 120 cm. Despite the fact that said widths fit the usual ceiling joist and rafter distances, practical use has shown that they are not readily suitable for use in the formation of insulating layers without openings or gaps.
  • Such cutting opens the casing with the ensuing risk that loose fibres are released during handling of the batts. Since such cutting of the batts is typically effected in comparatively small confined spaces this may cause the fibre concentration of the air to be inhaled by the insulating workers to reach an undesirably high value.
  • the insulating batts according to the invention are charac ⁇ terized in that the coherent porous sheet comprises at least one continuous zone which is more easily compressible than the remaining portion of the sheet.
  • the continuous zone may be located anywhere in the porous sheet but it is preferred that it constitutes an edge zone because such positioning facilitates the adaption of the insulating batt to the space in which it is to be placed.
  • the production of a mineral fibre sheet with a relatively easily compressible edge zone may be effected in different ways, e.g. by rolling of the edge zone, cf. DE-3203622 and WO 91/02128. Such rolling results in partial destruction of the bonding between the fibres of the otherwise relatively rigid sheet without destroying the sheet structure.
  • this treatment means that the fibres in the treated edge zone may relatively easily be displaced relative to each other.
  • the insulating batts according to the invention are preferably rectangular and the porous sheets are preferably provided with an edge zone at each of their two opposite edges which zone is relati ⁇ vely easily compressible.
  • the width(s) of the relatively easily compressible edge zone(s) is (are) preferably about 7.5 cm for batts having 10-cm-interval width variations from one batt to another.
  • mineral fibres as used herein comprises rock wool fibres, glass fibres, slag fibres and corresponding synthetic fibres pro ⁇ cuted from mineral starting materials.
  • the mineral fibre sheet consists of rock wool fibres and preferably it has a density corresponding to a weight of from 20 kg/m 3 to 60 kg/m 3 .
  • the density is preferably comprised within 10 and 60 kg/m 3 .
  • the binder used may be any binder which is conventionally used in the production of mineral fibre products.
  • a phenolic resin is used.
  • the air permeable casing consists of a non-woven organic or inorganic material.

  • the air permeable casing may optionally be produced in situ, i.e. by spraying or in another manner in which the fibres are applied directly onto the porous sheet.
  • Non-woven casings produced from natural fibres such as cellulosic, flax, coco-, hemp and similar fibres, are suitable.
  • suitable non-woven inorganic materials include glass fibre webs having a weight of from 10 to 100 g/m 2 and being prepared from glass fibres having a thickness of about 7-13 ⁇ m.
  • perforated films may be used as casing material, such as a polyethylene or polypropylene film having a weight of from 10 to 150 g/m 2 or a metal film, such as an aluminium film.
