Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method and a device with the aid of which the luminance or brightness, contrast or background lighting of screens is automatically and continuously adjusted as a function of the respective average ambient luminance in the visual field of the user.
- the object of the present invention is therefore to propose a method or a device with the aid of which the luminance of the screen is continuously and automatically adapted to the average luminance in the visual field of the user.
- the screen is coupled to an external light sensor which can be placed anywhere in the room and which monitors the luminance distribution in the visual field of the user.
- Figure 1 shows the structure of the device. It comprises at least one light sensor 1, an active connection 2, the control of the screen luminance 3, the screen 4 and the housing 5.
- the sensor 1 can be individually placed in the room and adjusted so that the detected solid angle corresponds approximately to the visual field of the user.
- FIG. 2 shows a possible placement of the sensor 1.
- An electronic control 3 installed in the display housing 5 or connectable via an interface ensures that brightness and contrast or the Backlight on the screen 'must be set so that the screen luminance is in an optimal ratio to the average luminance in the visual field.
- the brightness and contrast adjustment knobs known on the conventional screens would serve the user to adapt the automatic control of the screen luminance to his own preferences. Another possibility for calibrating the control system is to place and adjust the sensor 1 appropriately. This sensor should then capture the solid angle that the respective user travels most frequently with his gaze.
- the luminance of the screen can be set between 0 and approx. 100 cd / m2. With these values, luminance ratios of 1 to 3 in the visual field can be easily achieved.
- a maximum setting of the screen luminance (100 cd / m2) would also ensure a portable luminance milieu with average field of view luminance of up to 300 cd / m2. This value is hardly exceeded in rooms with functioning sun and glare protection measures.
- FIG. 3 shows a possible control characteristic.
- the average luminance in the field of view L Q is linear with the screen luminance Lg in the lower region. At the limit, the curve approaches the maximum screen luminance asymptotically. As soon as the optimal luminance ratio 1 to 3 is exceeded, this is indicated by a control lamp on the screen housing 5.
- the integration of the light sensor 1 into the screen housing 5 itself would also be conceivable. It is also important in this case that sensor 1 (or several sensors) detects the visual field of the user and that the detected solid angle can be set as flexibly as possible.
- FIG. 4 shows a possible arrangement of two sensors 1 on the screen housing 5.
- the housing 5 here has two “ears” at the two upper corners.
- a light sensor is placed at the tips of the ears.
- the sensors are set so that the solid angle detected by the two sensors detects the full background of the screen and corresponds approximately to the field of vision of the user.
- FIG. 5 shows a possible solution for the shielding of the sensor 1.
- the light sensor 1 is encased with a displaceable sleeve 6. Depending on the position of the sleeve, a smaller or larger solid angle can be set.
- a method for automatic control of the luminance of screens is thus proposed, the average luminance in the visual field of the user being detected by an externally attached light sensor 1 and this clearly quantifiable size serving as a guide variable for an ergonomically correct, automatic control of the screen luminance.
- a device for carrying out the method with a screen 4 with a housing 3 provided with a controller 3 for changing the screen luminance, in particular the brightness, the contrast and the background lighting, wherein it comprises at least one light sensor 1 which is connected to the controller 3 is so operatively connected that the arrangement of the light sensor 1 in the direction of view, and the shielding of the same on the Field of view of the user, the luminance of the screen 4 is automatically controllable as a function of the luminance distribution in the field of view of the user.
- a possible embodiment of the device is characterized in that the at least one light sensor 1 is arranged separately from the screen 4 in the room at a convenient location, and with the controller 3 e.g. is operatively connected by wire, infrared radio or ultrasound transmission.
- the at least one light sensor 1 can also be attached to the screen housing 5 itself.
- the contrast and / or the brightness and / or the background lighting can also be controlled automatically by the light sensor 1.
- the device can also be used with a television or video screen or other data display devices.
- a display device e.g. for measuring instruments and clocks can be controlled accordingly.
- the device can also be implemented in such a way that the looped-through RGB, video or YC signals are influenced by an externally arranged control.
- controller 3 It is advisable to provide the controller 3 with at least one control lamp, by means of which an unfavorable luminance ratio between the screen 4 and the surroundings can be signaled.
