It is often desirable to be able to change such angle transmissions in three dimensions, thereby obtaining vast possibilities of variation for these transmissions.
- the transmission includes two outer parts each with its own drive shaft and a bevel gear connected thereto, and also an intermediate part with a drive shaft provided at both ends with bevel gears in engagement with the bevel gears of the outer parts, the drive shafts of the outer parts forming an acute angle to the drive shaft of the intermediate part.
- the housings are pivotably connected to each other about planes perpendicular to the drive shaft of the intermediate part and pass through both the actual and the imagined cone apexes of the gears engaged with each other.
- Such a transmission can be altered between 0° and twice the acute angle between in-going and out-going shaft and the drive shaft of the intermediate part, for instance between 0 and 90° at an acute angle of 45°, as above.

- the inner end of the drive shaft of each outer part (1, 2) terminates in a bevel gear (10, 11) in engagement with corresponding bevel gears (12, 13), normally identical, at the ends of the drive shaft (8) of the intermediate part (7).
- the cross section of the bevel gears (10-13) may either be that of a truncated cone or a whole cone, and in both cases one may speak of a cone apex, real or imagined, where the generators of the bevel intersect each other.
- These cone apexes (14, 15) are located at the same point as the bevel gears in engagement with each other. In this case, the gears 10 and 12 are in engagement with each other, and the gears 11 and 13.
- the housings (5, 9, 6) of the various parts are mutually pivotable about planes (16, 17), perpendicular to the intermediate drive shaft (8), these planes (16, 17) also passing through both the cone apexes (14, 15).
- the drive shafts are journalled in the housings (5, 9, 6) in conventional manner.
- the housings can be locked in the positions set by means of locking members (18, 19) in the plane of pivot.
- the angle between the in-going and out-going shafts (3, 4) can be varied between 0° and 90° (see Figure 2).
