Definitions

  • This invention relates generally to radio communication devices and more specifically to a device for adapting a radio connector to connectors of external radio accessories.
  • Modern portable radios commonly feature compatibility with several accessories which may be connected to the radio, such as external microphones, speakers, or even personal computers. Such compatibility requires some means for connecting the internal circuitry of the radio to the circuitry of the external accessory.
  • an accessory when an accessory is connected to the radio it becomes necessary to inform the control means of the radio that the accessory has been connected, so that the operation of the radio can be adjusted accordingly.
  • Apparatus for selecting modes of operation for a radio depending on the external device connected to the radio are known.
  • United States Patent number 4,792,986, to Garner describes an option selection scheme using analog voltages, with an impedance device determining the voltage for an option. Each option would in turn use a different impedance, and thus generate a different voltage.
  • Such connectors may lack physical compatibility with existing radio accessories.
  • Adapters are used as means for connecting the internal circuitry of the radio to the circuitry of the external accessory. These are required where the radio accessories have connectors that are not physically compatible with the radio's connector.
  • the adapter may also be required to provide some information on the mode of radio operation required for the accessory (e.g., re ⁇ routing the radio's audio output to an external speaker or microphone).
  • an adapter indicates the presence of an external accessory (such as an external speaker) is to place a short circuit across two of the pins of the radio's accessory connector.
  • the problem with this approach is that the presence of the shorting jumper would re-route the audio from the internal to the external speaker in the accessory, whether or not the external speaker is connected to the adapter.
  • a communication device provides a connection between a radio accessory and a radio circuit.
  • the radio circuit has a computer controller, and an audio output.
  • the radio accessory includes a connector plug and a speaker.
  • the communication device includes a first coupler for coupling to the radio and a second coupler for coupling to the radio accessory.
  • a mode controller within the communication device provides a control signal to the computer controller of the radio circuit, thus causing the radio circuit to provide the audio output to the external accessory.
  • the control signal includes first and second states.
  • the mode controller comprises a transistor for establishing the first and second states.
  • the communication device further comprises a switch that causes the transistor to change from the first state to the second state in response to connecting the accessory plug to the second coupler.
  • FIG. 1 shows a communication system including a radio, an adapter, and an accessory, in accordance with an aspect of the invention.
  • FIG. 2 shows the communication system of FIG. 1 wherein a connector from the external accessory has been plugged into the adapter.
  • FIG. 1 there is shown a radio communication system in accordance with the invention.
  • external radio accessories such as that represented by block 400
  • the radio 200 is a simplified representation of a two-way portable or mobile radio.
  • a microcomputer (or microprocessor) 202 controls the operation of the radio 200.
  • Transceiver block 204 represents a conventional radio transceiver.
  • Option select block 1 (208) and option select block 2 (206) represent logic ports used to establish logic states for the microcomputer 202.
  • the microcomputer 202 can be programmed to cause the radio 200 to provide the receive audio to an internal or to an external speaker, depending on the logic level sensed at option select port 1 (208).
  • the microcomputer 202 has been programmed to route the receive audio to the external accessory's speaker 402 when the Opt. Sel. Port 1 (208) is at a logic zero voltage.
  • An accessory 400 includes an external speaker 402, an external microphone 406, a push-to-talk (PTT) switch 404, and a connector plug 408.
  • a dedicated Option Select path within the accessory adapter 300 is provided to cause receive audio from the radio 200 to be routed to the accessory 400 when it is connected to the adapter 300.
  • the adapter 300 contains mode control circuitry that controls the radio audio path routing (i.e., whether the radio 200 is in an internal speaker mode or an external speaker mode).
  • accessory pins are connected to the following jack pins.
  • Accessory pin 6 is now connected to jack pin 2
  • accessory pin 7 is connected to jack pin 5
  • accessory pin 8 is connected to jack pin 1.
  • receive audio is routed to the accessory's speaker 402 when the Opt. Sel. 1 port is a logic zero voltage.
  • FIGS. 1 and 2 can be implemented with the following part values:
  • implementing circuitry in conjunction with the jack switch contacts (4 and 5) provides an Option Select radio configuration signal to the radio 200. This allows receive audio to be routed to the radio's front cover speaker (not shown) when the accessory 400 is not connected to the adapter 300, and the audio to be re-routed to the external speaker 402 when the plug 408 is connected into the jack 302.
