Definitions

  • This invention relates to an assembly construction, more particularly to a construction which utilises a plurality of elements which can be used to form the basis for various constructions such as buildings, pergolas, shade houses, domestic dwellings, factories and which even can be used as the basis for educational toys.
  • joiners or connecting elements are often of metal and sometimes the joiners or connecting elements are of two parts which have to be bolted together thus clamping the end of the structural member therebetween.
  • metal and plastic connecting elements are known for connecting square or round tubing, the connecting elements having either sockets to receive the end of the tube, or spigots to be inserted into the end of the tubes.
  • Patent specification No AU-53816/86 describes a building component for a frame work for glass houses, garden houses and the like, the building component comprising a connecting element having a plurality of nodes or spigots which form journals to be inserted into the ends of tubes.
  • the elements can be in the form of elbows, T shape or cross shape or at an angle such as 45 degrees.
  • Patent specification AU-52722/86 is directed to a frame for a building having plurality of support members having at their upper ends an angled socket to receive arched roofing members which span from one support member to the other.
  • AU-26332/84 shows a structure having a plurality of arch like members which at each end are fixed to a foundation member embedded in or resting on the ground. Connecting elements and fastening devices are required for this purpose.
  • a similar form of construction is disclosed in AU-88985/82 where curved tubes are attached to sockets in a base member.
  • a construction assembly including at least one mounting assembly having a plurality of connecting sockets in a plurality of angles in one plane, into each of said sockets is inserted one end of a curved structural member which is connected to either another mounting assembly or to a supporting member on the surface on which the erected structure rests.
  • a construction assembly forming a framework for a structure, said structure including a central mounting assembly having a plurality of attachment members each adapted to receive an end of a curved supporting member, means associated with each of said attachment members to lock each supporting member in its respective attachment member in its erected position, the invention including the method of erecting the structure by positioning the mounting assembly on the ground, inserting each curved supporting member in its respective attachment member, elevating the mounting assembly whereby the supporting members rotate relative to their respective attachment members to be locked in position in the erected position.
  • FIG. 1 is a perspective view of an erected structure
  • FIG. 2 is a view of one embodiment of a central mounting assembly
  • FIG. 3 is a view of an alternate mounting assembly with locking mechanism
  • FIG. 4 is a partial cross sectional view of the locking mechanism
  • FIG. 5 shows the structure before erection
  • FIG. 6 shows a still further embodiment of the invention.
  • the structure 1 comprises a plurality of curved tubular support members 2 attached at their upper end to a central mounting assembly 3.
  • the mounting assembly 3 comprises a plurality of tubular sockets 4 welded to a bottom plate 5 and a top plate 6. It will be realised that the actual construction of the mounting assembly can vary with either the top plate of the bottom plate being omitted as long as the mounting assembly has the plurality of tubular sockets.
  • the sockets are equally spaced around the mounting assembly an in this example the sockets are radially spaced in a horizontal plane. However the sockets may be equally spaced but each inclined downwardly by up to 30 or 45 degrees.
  • the support members 2 are preferably tubular and can be of a plastics material such as PVC for a smaller structure, but may be o metal such as steel or aluminium tube for a larger structure.
  • the structure is supported on a base comprising a perimeter ring 7 which has joining members 8 which connect adjacent portions of the perimeter ring 7 and which are provided with a socket 9 to receive the lower end of the respective support member 2.

  • the perimeter ring as straight portions between the respective joining members 8, but if desired these portions may be curved so that the perimeter ring forms a circle.
  • the mounting assembly 10 is positioned on the surface on which the structure is to be erected, and the curved tubular support members 11 are positioned in the sockets 12 of the mounting assembly, the support members being laid out all extending in the same direction and generally parallel to each other.
  • a form of spiral can be formed.
  • Each of the sockets 12 has a locking mechanism (to be later described) to lock the support members 11 in position when the structure is in the erected position.

  • each locking mechanism engages its respective support member 11 to thus lock it in the erected position.
  • the mounting assembly 10 comprises in this embodiment a bottom plate 13 and a centre ring 14 to which the tubular sockets 12 are affixed, as by welding.
  • the centre ring 14 can be attached to the bottom plate 13 by the provision of lugs on the centre ring 14 which are bolted to the bottom plate 13. Alternately the centre ring 14 may be welded to the bottom plate 13.
  • each socket 12 there is provided a spring loaded spigot 15 which passes through a hole 16 in the ring 14 to engage a hole 17 in an end cap 18 of the support member 11.
  • the locking assembly is off-centre of the support member 11 and so is spaced from the axis of the socket 12. This is so that when the support member 11 is turned to its erected vertical position under the effect of gravity during the lifting of the mounting assembly, that the spigot 15 engages in the hole 16 in the end of the support member 11.
  • the spigot 15 has a collar 18 and is supported in a housing 19, the spigot extending through a hole in the end 20 of the housing 19.

  • the key or bolt 23 can be turned from underneath the bottom plate 13. In this way when it is desired to dismantle or lower the structure it is merely necessary to turn the key 23 to thus withdraw each spigot from engagement with its respective supporting member 11.
  • the mounting assembly 10 can then be rotated and at the same time the structure can be lowered by a crane or the like. Once on or near the ground each support member 11 can then be removed from its respective socket.
  • FIG. 6 there is shown a still further form of the invention.
  • a basically circular structure being constructed, it can be seen that generally rectangular structure is easily provided.
  • two or mor mounting assemblies 24 are shown with a connecting member 25 extending between adjacent aligned sockets of the mounting assemblies.
  • Support members 26 extend from the mounting assemblies to thus form a basically rectangular structure which could be used as a car port or other shelter or storage area.
  • further mounting assemblies could be positioned parallel to the mounting assemblies 24 with further connecting members 25 extending at right angles to the connecting members 25 shown in FIG. 6 to thus form a structure of greater width.
