Definitions
- the present invention concerns a roof element, as stated in the introductory part of patent claim 1.
- Fig. 1 is a schematic view from above of a roof element according to the present invention
- Fig. 2 is the roof element from Fig. 1 seen from one side
- Fig. 3 is an illustration of the lateral connection of two roof elements according to present invention
- Fig. 4 shows how the connection of two roof elements according to the invention is being done upwards the roof
- Fig. 5 shows a roof element according to present invention, seen from above
- Fig. 6 is the roof element from Fig. 5 seen from the side.
- a roof element 1 comprising tile laths 2, and engagement laths 3 and elements 4 of roofing material.
- wooden shingle is used as the elements 4 of roofing material.
- the engagement laths 3 are provided to be laid upwards on a roof.
- the tile laths 2 are situated over and transverse to the engagement laths.
- the shingles 4 lie above and transverse to the tile laths 2, i.e. parallel to the engagement laths.
- laths corresponding to tile laths 2 and the engagement laths 3 are nailed in place on the roof in one operation, and the shingles are laid individually thereon.
- the tile laths 2 and the engagement laths 3 are connected to each other using nails, staples, screws, glue or another commonly used connection means.
- the distance between the engagement laths 3 is choosen so that they rest on the carrying elements of the roof. For most Norwegian roofs this means a distance between the engagement laths of 60 cm.
- the distance between the tile laths is choosen appropriately in relation to the roofing material 4 that is to be used and in relation to desired strength.
- the tile laths are positioned at a distance of about ca. 14 cm.
- the distance between the lowermost tile lath 2a and the next lowermost tile laths 2b is less than the dis-tance between the rest of the neighbouring tile laths 2b, 2c and 2d. This is done to provide a means for simple connection between roof elements. The connection will be described in more detail below.
- the roof element 1 is produced by using fixed templates, or frames, in which the engagement laths 3 and the tile laths 2 are located and nailed.
- templates are fixed to a pivoting axis and have the function of providing a magazine with roofing material 4 which lower down onto the tile laths during manufacturing. This makes it simple and quick to manufacture the roof elements.
- the device comprising templates (nailing frames) makes it very easy to automate the assembly of the roof elements.
- the shingle or the tiles 4 are fixed to the tile laths 3 with nails or cramps (staples).
- a stapling machine is used.
- the connection is done in such a way that the roofing material each get at least two, preferably four, fastening points. This ensures a very direction-stable and strong roof element. It is preferred to use staples and apply these transversally to the fiber direction in the wooden shingle, as shown in fig. 1. This ensures a specially good fastening even if the roofing material should crack.
- the lifetime of a roof is very often determined by the fastening of the roofing elements becoming corroded. This is especially the case with a roofing element made from wooden shingles or tiles.
- stainless steel 18/18 Cr/Ni is used for fastening.
- This material is smooth, and it is therefore important to use expanding staples for the fastenings.
- the engagement laths 3 and the tile laths 2 in the roof element 1 is are so positioned that two engagement laths 3 and tile laths 2 will meet in the joint between two roof elements; thus giving the correct distance between the roof elements and the shingles/tiles both longitudinally and laterally. This makes it very easy to lay the roof elements correctly on the roof without the necessity of using specialized tools or skill.
- Fig. 3 there is described in more detail the mounting of the roof elements 1 according to present invention to complete a roof.
- the roof elements 1 are constructed so that they fit (slip) into each other and forms a tight joint by the shingles/tiles 4, overlapping on every edge of the joint between adjacent elements 1.
- the roofing will be in the same way and of the same quality as the joint in the rest of the element 1.
- the engagement laths 3a and 3b on two neighbouring elements 1 will lie close together.
- the engagement laths 3 are dimensioned so that two neighbouring elements can fit and be fastened on the same rafter 6.
- the engagement laths of the roof elements are fastened with nails, screws, glue or cramps to the underroof, rafts etc. On new roofs this system is very suitable for underroof of fiber plates or strong paper.
- uppermost tile lath 2 is constructed so that the engagement laths 3 of the adjacent roof element slips under this at building of a roof is specially important because it is thereby possible to achieve fastening of all edges without nailing (penetrating) the elements 4 of roofing material. If this snterfitting were not present, it would not be possible to reach the corner which is covered by the element of roofing material 4 to fasten the roof elements through the engagement laths to the bases or the rafters without loosning one or more of the elements of roofing material.
- the roofing material can be natural stone, such as slate or similar, furthermore cement or other cast stone, roofing paper on an appropriate base or different metal plates can be used.
- tiles or shingles of wood form a suitable roofing material for this kind of roof element.
- the dimension of the roof elements 1 can be adopted to the particular roofing element when dealing to handiness at transport and connection. Elements having the dimension of e.g. 2,5 x 4,8 m with wooden elements of roofing material will have the weight of about 60 kg, and are easy to lift onto the roof. If lifting equipment is not present, dimensions of 60 x 60 will be more appropriate and easier to handle manually. In a prefered embodiment of the elements are made in a dimension of 120 x 78 cm.
- a roof element 1 which is provided with an underroof plate 7 as an integrated part thereof.
- Underroof is necessary to isolate roofs for keeping the isolation away from the roofing element, inhibit air circulation in the isolation, provide airing of the roofing material and be an extra barrier against leakage if the primary roofing for some reason or another is broken. Most houses and farm buildings are built with underroof.
- underroof made from roofing paper or wooden fiberplates, but other material can also be utilized.
- the underroof material is cut into plates of a size to fit the roof elements. Cutting and fastening of the roof element is such that the underroof plate 7 will extend flush with the engagement laths on the lower and right edge while extending minimally 5 cm in the upper and left edge of the roof element.
- the underroof plate is fastened to the engagement laths on the underside of the roof element with staples or glue.
- this embodiment will result in an underroof with an overlap of minimum 5 cm in the direction of the water flow down the roof and engaged against the basis or the rafter in double thickness under the engagement laths of the next adjacent roof element.
