Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a compound of gems and ⁇ to a method for producing it.
  • a multiplicity of gems such as faceted glass stones, were hitherto usually connected by providing the gems with bores and linking two adjacent gems by means of metal wire through the bores.
  • Such an assembly is expensive.
  • the bores impair the esthetic impression, in particular when several rows of gems are to be joined into a compound.
  • Such compounds of gems are very desirable for decorative purposes.
  • the present invention is based on the problem of provid ⁇ ing a compound of gems whereby the gems can be connected in a simple and labor-saving way without impairing the optical im ⁇ pression, and the gems can be connected with other materials in a simple way.
  • the invention is based on the finding that this problem can be solved by connecting the gems by means of shrinkable synthetic threads and using the thread simultaneously to con ⁇ nect them to the materials to be decorated.
  • the object of the invention is a compound of gems charac ⁇ terized in that a multiplicity of gems disposed side by side are held in a grid consisting of longitudinal threads and transverse threads, whereby at least the longitudinal threads or the transverse threads engage grooves provided laterally in the gems, the longitudinal threads and transverse threads are made of shrunk plastics, and the grid extends beyond the gems.
  • the inventive compound of gems is suitable for many areas of the decorations trade.
  • the compound of gems can be connected with any desired materi ⁇ als and objects easily and in many different arrangements.
  • Such compounds of gems can of course also be used as transparent bands which are integrated in lampshades. It is also conceivable to connect them with leather goods, e.g. purses and the like.
  • the compounds of gems can be used here as decorative "windows" by being inserted into a corresponding recess in the piece of leather by means of the protruding grid and fixed between the outer leather and the lining.
  • the inven ⁇ tive compound of gems can be used particularly decoratively in this connection with leather straps for watches. For this pur ⁇ pose a one- or two-row compound of gems matching an e.g. rect ⁇ angular recess provided in the watch strap is inserted in this recess and connected with the watch strap by means of the lat ⁇ erally protruding grid. This results in fashionable watch straps with special esthetic effects.
  • the compound of gems can be fixed to the materials or ob ⁇ jects to be decorated by being sewn or stuck to the substrate or fastened thereto via projecting grid threads.
  • the project ⁇ ing grid or protruding grid threads can be provided in a suit- able way with an adhesive strip by means of which the compound of gems is stuck to the material to be decorated.
  • the grid extends beyond the gems on at least one longitudinal side of the compound.
  • Such embodiments are particularly suitable for forming bor ⁇ ders.
  • the grid extends beyond the gems on both longitudinal sides of the compound, by at least one row of grid points.
  • the grid consisting of longitu ⁇ dinal and transverse threads is preferably welded together at the points of intersection.
  • the term "gem” is used here in its most general form and includes all types of gems, referring in particular to faceted glass stones.
  • the form of the gems can be manifold, for exam ⁇ ple square, rectangular, octagonal and/or oval.
  • the size of the gems is also variable within wide limits, for example be ⁇ tween 5 and 100 mm.
  • the gems can have any desired color. They can have any desired cut.
  • the gems have lateral grooves for taking up the synthetic threads.
  • the depth and width of the grooves may be between 0.5 and 5 mm, for example.
  • the grooves are adapted to the diameter of the synthetic thread.
  • the width of the synthetic thread de ⁇ pends on the size of the gems and the required tensile strength.
  • Grooves can be provided only on two parallel side sur ⁇ faces for taking up the longitudinal or transverse threads. Alternatively, grooves can be provided on all four sides of the gem for taking up both the longitudinal and the transverse threads.
  • Figure 1 shows an embodiment of a single-row compound of gems from the front
  • Figure 2 shows an embodiment of the compound of gems.
  • FIG 1 shows that rectangular gems 2 are held by grids 3 consisting of longitudinal threads 4 and transverse threads
  • transverse threads 5 extend alongside gem 2.
  • grid 3 extends on both longitu ⁇ dinal sides of compound of gems 1 beyond gems 2, by one row of points of intersection 9' .
  • the longitudinal and transverse threads are welded or glued at points of intersection 9 and 9*.
  • the grid can also be prefabricated by stamping. It is also conceivable for the grid to extend beyond the transverse sides of the compound of gems.
  • the inventive compound of gems is specially suitable for decorating a great variety of materials, articles and objects since it can easily be con ⁇ nected with the substrate to be decorated by the protruding grid threads.
  • This connection can be created by sewing or weaving.
  • an adhesive strip can be ap ⁇ plied to the protruding grid .area. It is suitable to use a double-sided self-adhesive band which firstly produces the ad ⁇ hesive connection with the protruding grid threads and sec- ondly connects the compound of gems adhesively with the sub ⁇ strate to be decorated.
  • adhesive strips are provided on both sides of the pro ⁇ truding grid threads. Additional decorative elements, for ex ⁇ ample borders and the like, can then be provided on the upper side of the compound of gems on the longitudinal sides.
  • the synthetic threads used are ones made of shrinkable plastics.
  • the grid is dimensioned so that the gems can be eas ⁇ ily inserted.
  • the synthetic threads snap into the lateral grooves, whereby they are sufficiently prevented from falling through if only either the longitudinal threads or the trans ⁇ verse threads come to lie in grooves. For esthetic reasons, however, it can be advantageous if both the transverse and the longitudinal threads extend in grooves.
  • the synthetic threads are subjected to a shrinking process.
  • the shrinking is usually performed by heat treatment.
  • the cold-worked thermo ⁇ plastic synthetic threads preferably used contract to their original state during heat treatment. Shrinkages of 3 to 5% or even much more are easy to obtain.
  • Plastics which can be sub ⁇ jected to shrinkage are polyethylene terephthalate, polyethyl ⁇ ene, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyacry- lonitrile, polyamide and polycarbonate. Polyamide is particu ⁇ larly preferred. Fiber-reinforced plastics may also be used.
  • Oriented or stretched plastics are also preferred due to their elevated strength.
  • the suitable shrinking temperatures are selected in ac ⁇ cordance with the plastics used.
  • the shrinkage can be obtained at temperatures between 100 and 120°C by im ⁇ mersion in an accordingly hot liquid.
  • the nature and arrangement of the gems can be extremely varied.
  • the spaces between the gems, their size and their design can be any way one desires.
  • the diameters of the synthetic threads are for example between 0.3 and 5 mm.
  • the inventive compounds of gems are very simple and eco ⁇ nomic to produce and are characterized by a special esthetic effect through the use of thin, transparent or colored syn ⁇ thetic threads, for example.
  • the use of the compounds of gems is manifold. Since the grid extends beyond the row(s) of gems the compound can be attached simply and reliably in many dif ⁇ ferent ways.
  • the inventive compound of gems can be connected easily and firmly with a great variety of materi ⁇ als and can furthermore be used with other decorative elements such as borders and the like.
  • Figure 2 shows the compound of gems in an embodiment in connection with a watch strap.
  • watch strap 10 a recess 11 is provided into which matching compound of gems 1 is in ⁇ serted.
  • the form of the recess and the color and form of the parts forming the compound of gems can be varied within wide limits.
