Abstract
A device designed to, on vessel decks (3) or the like, lash two containers (1, 2), placed on top of each other, comprising a yoke (12), which is directly or indirectly pivoted in a deck fastener (4, 5) and has two arms with one respective connection point (20, 21) on each arm for two mutually interacting rods (13, 14), which run diagonally across a lower container (1) and are designed, with their respective opposite ends (24), to be connected to the upper corner box (6) of the lower container (1) and the lower cornner box (7) of the upper container (2) respectively, and in which device a tightening device (11) is provided, designed to simultaneously stretch said lashing rods (13, 14), the yoke distributing the load equally onto the two interacting lashing rods (13, 14).
Description
The present invention generally relates to a device de¬ signed to fasten or "lash" one or several containers on a vessel, and the invention more specificly relates to a lashing device, by means of which two containers, which are placed on top of each other, can be lashed from a common point on the vessel and particularly in such a way, that the lashing rods for the two containers will be equally loaded.
It is customary to lash containers by fastening two lash¬ ing rods .in a deck fastener on the vessel, located close to one of the lower corners of the lower container. The two lashing rods are stretched diagonally upwards along the container side, and one of the rods is fastened in the upper corner box on the lower container and the other rod in the lower corner box on the upper container. Also, it is customary to mount a similar device from a deck faste¬ ner close to the second lower corner on the lower contai¬ ner and running diagonally across the container side, crossing the above-mentioned two lashing rods.
It is important in this case that the lashing rods are loaded with the same tension as far as it is feasible. It is very difficult to calculate the tension in the lashing rods and particularly to see to it that the loads on the two parallel rods for a lower container and an upper con¬ tainer are the same. In order to eliminate the risk of overloading any of these parallel rods, considering the fact that it is very difficult to see to it and check that the two rods are equally loaded, the responsible authori¬ ties have provided, that the lashing device must be de¬ signed to be much stronger than what is actually needed, and customarily an additional safety factor, about 1.33, has been used, which is to be added to the normally used safety factor.
This has resulted in making these known lashing devices heavy as well as expensive. The object of the present in¬ vention is to solve this problem and suggest a lashing de¬ vice for containers, which is designed in such a way, that it will be easier than before to utilize the entire strenghth of the two lashing rods, by equally or almost equally distributing the load between two interacting, parallel lashing rods, by what means it will be possible to eliminate the need of applying the above-mentioned "extra" safety factor.
This is done in accordance with the present invention by mounting, directly or indirectly, in the common deck fas¬ tener a pivotal yoke having two arms for two interacting lashing rods, the yoke being fastened in a central point and the two lashing rods being connected to the respective arm ends of the yoke. The lashing rods are subsequently connected, in a known way, to respective corner boxes, located diagonally from the deck fastener, on the two con¬ tainers placed on top of each other, and the yoke or one of the lashing rods is stretched, the yoke distributing the load between the two lashing rods at least almost equally. By means of such a design it is actually possible to avoid said extra safety factor, and in this way it is possible to lower the weight of the lashing device and also its cost as well as to increase its strength.
The present invention will now be described in more de¬ tail, with reference to the accompanying drawings, which relate to two embodiments of the invention. In the draw¬ ings Fig. 1 shows a first embodiment of a device designed to lash, on the deck of a vessel, two containers, placed on top of each other. Fig. 2 shows an alternative embodi¬ ment of the lashing device, and Fig. 3 shows a lashing fastener on the deck of the vessel, having a yoke faste¬ ner for two lashing rods mounted in the lashing fastener.
In Fig. 1 two containers 1 and 2 are illustrated schema- ticly. They can e.g. be placed right along the lateral
edge of a vessel in a line ("bay") of containers. Lower con¬ tainer 1 is placed on deck 3 of the vessel with its lower corners adjacent deck fasteners 4,5 for the containers. Between the shown left deck fastener 4 and the upper right corner box 6 of lower container 2 and lower right corner box 7 of upper container 2 a double lashing device 8 ac¬ cording to the invention extends, and between right deck fastener 5 and lower left corner box 9 of the upper con¬ tainer a simple lashing device 10 extends. Lashing devices 8 and 10 may both be double, but in many cases it is suf¬ ficient to use a double lashing device 8 for outer corner boxes 6 and 7 in one container line and a simple lashing device 10, connected to inner corner box 9 of upper con¬ tainer 2.
Tightening device 11 comprises in the illustrated case a conventional double stretching screw 15, a lower screw 16 and an upper screw 17. Lower screw 16 is pivotally faste¬ ned to a pin 18 in deck fastener 4. The upper screw sup¬ ports yoke 12 in its center between the yoke arms and pi¬ votally over a pin 19. Yoke 12 is pivoted in its center, and it is provided with a hook 20,21 in its respective arm ends, to be connected to a loop 22 and 23 respectively at the end of rod 13 and 14 respectively. Hook 21 has, for practical reasons, been made somewhat deeper than hook 20 or has an inner angular distance, which is substantially larger than 90 , and in this way hook 21 can be used as a fastening point for a simple lashing rod, as is illustra¬ ted in connection with simple lashing device 10 in Fig. 1. Lashing rods 13 and 14 have at their respective ends a rod head 24 with a suitable shape and size, designed to be secured to a respective corner box 6,7 in respective con¬ tainers 1 and 2.
The mounting of the lashing device is done in a simple way by connecting tightening device 11 to deck fastener 4 by means of its pin 18; lashing rods 13 and 14 are con¬ nected, by means of their rod heads 24, to adjacent cor-
ner boxes 6 and 7 of containers 1 and 2; stretching screw 15 is screwed outwards as far as is needed in order to con¬ nect rods 13 and 14 with their loops 22 to hooks 20 and 21 at the arm ends of yoke 12; and stretching screw head 15 is tightened with the required force. Yoke 12 distributes the tension equally in the two lashing rods 13 and 14.
Lashing device 10 is mounted in a similar way, but in this case only one lashing rod 14 is used, which is connected to and is stretched between left corner box 9 of the upper container, and deep hook 21 of yoke 12 and consequently al¬ so to right deck fastener 5.
Fig. 2 shows a device having two double lashing rods and in which yoke 12" is pivotally connected directly to deck fastener 4. In this case rod 13 is connected to yoke 12 over a fastening link 25 having an upper collar 26 and a lower collar 27. Collars 26 and 27 are open laterally and thus, a knob 28 at the end of rod 13 can be retained behind the collar. By designing the fastening link with two alternatively useable collars 26 and 27 at a suitable distance from each other, it is possible to use one and the same lashing rod 13 for containers having different heights, e.g. for so called 8 feet- and 9 feet-contai¬ ners.
Second lashing rod 14 is connected to yoke 12" over a second fastening link 29 having a plurality of alterna¬ tively useable collars 30 of the same type as collars 26 and 27 on link 25. Link 29 is at its lower end designed as a simple stretching screw 31, and the stretching of rods 13 and 14 is in this case done at the same time, when stretching screw 31 is tightened, the load being equally distributed on rods 13 and 14 by means of yoke 12".
Fig. 3 shows fastening links 25 and 29 more in detail, before lashing rods 13 and 14 have been connected. Yoke
12"" is in this case designed as a circular disk, which by means of pin 18 is rotatably connected to deck faste¬ ner 4.
