  • a navigation aid including: a base system comprising a radar for generating data relating to an imaged region, means for converting the data obtained into a plurality of image frames, and means for transmitting sequentially the plurality of image frames; and a sub system comprising means for sequentially receiving and storing the plurality of image frames and means for selectively displaying one or more of said stored frames.
  • each sub system which may be carried by a small craft such as a boat, to carry and energise its own radar, instead the only equipment required is a suitable means for receiving the radar frames and means for displaying the information, for example a cathode ray tube, LCD, or other such tv display type device.
  • the radar frames are transmitted sequentially it is possible to transmit the data, preferably by broadcasting, from the base system to the sub system at a low rate if desired, enabling flexibility of transmission wave bands, and therefore transmission range and receiving equipment.
  • Advantageously data is obtained from a plurality of radars and the base system comprises digital scan conversion means to multiplex and store radar data from said plurality of radars enabling inputs to be made from the radars at high resolution, thereby enhancing performance when selectively viewing specific areas of a frame.
  • different image frames relate to different geographical regions, and in which case it is preferable that image frames relating to a specific geographical region are transmitted to that region.
  • a navigation aid includes a base system comprising three radar transmitter receiver units 1, 2 and 3, a high resolution picture store/frame sequencer 4 , a transmitter 5 and associated antenna 6, and a sub system comprising a receiver 7 associated antenna 8 a frame store 9 and a monitor 10.
  • the radar units 1, 2 and 3 are located along the shore line and image an area of ocean in which the sub system is located.
  • the output image of the radar units 1, 2, 3 is fed to the picture store 4 where additional information is input at A to provide overlay information on the radar image within the store.
  • the overlay may depict lines of latitude and longitude, the onshore/offshore boundary or any other feature of specific interest, for example light houses, submerged rocks etc.
  • the input A can also be used to provide additional frames of information such as weather maps, geographical data, weather forecasts etc.
  • the frames generated from the radar and input at A / are processed by the frame sequencer within the unit 4 to provide an output to the transmitter 5.
  • the output comprises a sequence of radar frames which are transmitted to receiver 7 via antennas 6 and 8.
  • the received signal in the sub system is conveyed to the frame store 9 where each frame is stored until it is updated.
  • An operator accesses the store by providing an input at 'B' indicating that a selected frame should be output to the monitor 10.
  • the operator may select any radar frame within the frame store, or alternatively may select multiple frames for superposition, for example a weather map may be superimposed to the same scale upon a radar image.
  • the input B may also be connected to suitable cursor generating means (not shown) to generate cursors indicating upon the radar image the location of the sub system.
  • the embodiment described relates to a coastal radar application, it will be appreciated the invention is equally applicable to other applications.
  • One example would be a high resolution short range airport surveillance radar, whereby the base system would be contained within the airport infrastructure and the sub system within an aircraft, especially a small light aircraft not normally equipped with radar.
  • Such a system would be particularly useful to taxing aircraft in conditions of poor visability, enabling them to monitor other aircraft and "air side" support vehicles.
  • Another forseable application is in search and rescue operations whereby an airbourne base system would be carried by helicopter and could coordinate a plurality of smaller lifeboats each able to obtain information from the high performance radar carried on board the helicopter.
