Description

WIPER AND WASHING ARRANGEMENT FOR A VEHICLE WINDSCREEN
The present invention concerns a wiper and washing arrangement for a vehicle windscreen, compris- ing
- a windscreen wiper with arm and blade;
- a washing fluid jetting apparatus, its jetting head disposed on the windscreen wiper;
- a plurality of washing fluid nozzles arranged on the arm in two nozzle rows, and in each such row spaced at a distance in the longitudinal direction of the arm, the first nozzle row being disposed to direct the jets on a first side of the blade and the second nozzle row being disposed to direct the jets on the second side of the blade;
- a first washing fluid duct for the first nozzle row and a second washing fluid duct for the second nozzle row; and
- distribution means for distributing the washing fluid alternatively into the first duct or the second duct, for directing the jets in the wiper's direction of motion to the leading side of the blade, -a hollow space for the washing fluid, this space com¬ municating with the jetting apparatus and the entrance apertures of the washing fluid ducts opening into said space.
The object of the present invention is to effect such improvement of a wiper and washing arrange¬ ment of this kind that the windscreen can always be made completely clean, whatever the conditions. This aim is achieved by means of the arrangement of the invention which is characterized in that, furthermore, within said hollow space has been provided an electric resistance heater to prevent freezing of the washing fluid and/or to melt the ice that may be present there¬ in; and/or in the blade has been provided an electric resistance heater to prevent icing of the blade and/or to melt the ice that may be present thereon.
Using such an arrangement, one gains improved traffic safety because any dirt that is deposited on the windscreen is efficiently removed under all and any conditions. Since a plurality of nozzles is provided for each direction of motion, the system is not either inactivated in the event that one of the nozzles should become clogged. Also, the cost of the system will be low because the requisite washing fluid ducts and noz- zles can be formed directly in the wiper arm and be¬ cause their controls can be implemented in a simple way, yet reliably at the same time. Thus the wiper will stay completely unfrozen also in heavy rain and in freezing rain. The heating of the hollow space, in its turn, guarantees that the wiper is equally operative when the washing fluid tends to freeze.
In an embodiment of the wiper and washing arrangement, the distribution means include electrical¬ ly operated valves disposed in conjunction with the washing fluid ducts; and electric limit switches dis¬ posed to react on the extreme positions of the wiper's reciprocating motion and to control the opening and closing of the valves for alternative distribution of washing fluid to the first duct or to the second duct. The invention is described in greater detail in the following with the aid of one exemplary embodi¬ ment, referring to the attached drawings, wherein:- Fig. 1 presents an arrangement according to the inven¬ tion, in elevational view and partly sectioned, Fig. 2 shows the arm of the windscreen wiper of Fig. l,as seen from behind the vehicle's windscreen, i.e., in the direction X in Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 presents the section III-III of Fig. 1, i.e., the cross section of the wiper, and Figs 4a-4e illustrate the principle of operation of the arrangement, as observed from behind the windscreen.
The windscreen wiper and washing arrangement depicted in the drawings comprises the windscreen wiper proper, which has been indicated with reference numeral 1 and which comprises an arm 2 and a blade 3, and a washing fluid jetting apparatus with which washing fluid is jetted onto the windscreen 4 (see Fig. 1) . These are the principal components of the windscreen wiper and washing arrangement.
In the arrangement of the invention, which is best understandable e.g. by reference to Figs 1-3 in combination, on the arm 2 of the wiper 1 have been pro¬ vided, in its longitudinal direction and spaced from each other, a plurality of washing fluid nozzles 5a and 5b in two rows A and B. The nozzles 5a in the first row A are disposed to direct the jets on a first side of the blade 3; in this case, depending on the position of the wiper, first on its topside and then on the left side when the situation is observed from behind the windscreen 4. The nozzles 5b in the second row B are disposed to direct the jets on the other side of the blade, that is, when observed as described above, on the right side of the blade and thereunderneath.
For conducting the washing fluid to the noz¬ zles 5a and 5b on the arm 2 there is a first washing fluid duct 6 for the first nozzle row A and a second washing fluid duct 7 for the second nozzle row B. Fur¬ thermore, the pivot-side end of the arm 2 has been shaped to define an internally hollow, substantially cylindrical volume 8 into which the intake apertures 6a and 7a of said ducts 6 and 7 open and which communi- cates through a flexible tune 9 with the washing fluid container (not depicted) .
Within the afore-mentioned hollow space 8 have then been disposed the means, indispensable for the operation of this arrangement, for distributing the washing fluid entering this space, alternatively into the first duct 6 or into the second duct 7. In the present example embodiment, these washing fluid means comprise a closing member 11 rotatably carried on the turning shaft 10 of the windscreen wiper l, this clos¬ ing member having closing faces lla and lib urged against the inside surface of the hollow space 8, for the intake apertures 6a and 7a for each washing fluid duct 6 and 7; and a pin component 12 cooperating with the closing members 11, this pin being disposed between the closing surfaces lla and lib on the base of rota¬ tion 13 of the wiper, which encloses and seals the hol¬ low space 8, for so moving the closing surfaces lla and lib that between the hollow space 8 communicating with the water tank and the first washing fluid duct 6, or between the hollow space 8 and the second washing fluid duct 7, is opened an alternative connection during the reciprocating movement of the wiper 1, in such manner that the washing fluid jets will be directed in the current wiping direction.
In the following, these opening and closing events of the alternating communications, or the jet- ting of washing fluid on the vehicle's windscreen under control by the extreme positions of the wiper's recip¬ rocating motion in the manner taught by the invention, are described, step by step, with the aid of Figs 4a-4e. In Figs 4a-4e (as also in Fig. 2) the wind¬ screen wiper 1 and its operation are considered viewing it from behind the windscreen 4, that is from the di¬ rection from which its operation is also observed in practice when the vehicle is in use. Fig. 4a represents the situation in which the wiper 1 begins to move upward from its position at rest. The closing member 11 is then in a position in which communication exists from the hollow space 8 to the first washing fluid duct 6, and if now washing fluid is jetted onto the windscreen, it will be ejected through the nozzles 5a to the area above the blade, i.e., on the side that is going to be wiped. In Fig. 4b the wiper is approaching its end position pointing upwards to the left, and the closing member 11 begins under control by the stationary pin component 12 to move away from coverage of the orifice 7a of the second washing fluid duct 7 and at the same time partially closes the orifice 6a of the first wash¬ ing fluid duct 6, whereby the jetting direction begins to change (this takes place very rapidly in practice) . In Fig. 4c the wiper has reached its end posi- tion and begins to return towards the position at rest. The closing member 11 has now moved completely off the orifice 7a of the second washing fluid duct 7 and the washing fluid deposited on the windscreen is now all jetted through the nozzles 5b in the wiping direction mow in hand.
In Fig. 4d the wiper continues its travel down towards the position at rest, or its other end posi¬ tion, and the closing member 11 stays in that position into which it moved at the stage illustrated by Fig. 4c, and therefore washing fluid flows all the time in the wiping direction, through the nozzles 5b.
In Fig. 4e the wiper is about to reach its position at rest, and the closing member 11 begins, moved by the pin component 12, to close the duct 7, and thereby to shut off the flow through the nozzles 5b, and to open the duct 6 and thus to shift the jetting to take place once again through the nozzles 5a. This means change-over to the stage of Fig 4a again, and the same steps, just described, can be repeated over and over again.
It is possible by changing the dimensioning of the closing member 11 and the placement of the pin com¬ ponent 12 relative to the closing member, to adjust the closing/opening times of the ducts 6 and 7 in vicinity of the end positions to occur at any desired position of the wiper. It is advantageous to time the change¬ over of washing fluid flow from one duct to the other to take place somewhat before each end position of the wiper so that washing fluid might be available in time in the wiping direction which comes next because it is a fact that the movements of the wiper are comparative- ly fast.
In order to prevent freezing of the hollow space 8 of the arm or to melt any ice that may be pres¬ ent therein, it is advisable to provide in this space an electric resistance heater 14 because operating the wiper with the hollow space 8 full of ice could damage the closing member 11 and the pin component 12. Of course, no freezing whatsoever can occur if sufficient frost resistance of the washing fluid is taken care of.
It is highly advantageous at the same time to provide also at least the blade 3 of the wiper with an electric resistance 15, whereby freezing of the blade fast to the windscreen 4, or its freezing on the whole, is prevented. This is a highly important property if,- for instance, the wiper is operated in freezing rain. Electric current can be carried to the afore¬ mentioned resistance heaters 14 and 15 from the vehicle e.g. through the turning shaft 10 of the arm 2 and through the pin component 12, with the aid of electric leads 16 and 17 connecting with them. If in the arrangement of the invention the wiper arm 2 and blade 3 are desired to be such that they can be turned into a position in which they are out of contact with the windscreen 4,it is possible to provide in the vicinity of the pivot-side end of the arm e.g. a pivot furnished with a spring urging the arm towards the windscreen. This detail is not shown in the figures.
In the foregoing, the invention has been de¬ scribed with the aid of one advantageous exemplary embodiment only. In its details, particularly as re¬ gards the washing fluid distributing means, the ar¬ rangement of the invention can be carried out in nu er- ous different ways within the protective sphere defined by the claims following below. For instance, the wash¬ ing fluid distribution means may consist of electric valves provided in conjunction with the washing fluid ducts and of limit electric switches controlling their opening and closing.
