Description

Replacement air valve
The present invention relates to a replacement air valve which can be fitted in an opening made in a wall structure or the like and which is provided with an air filter, a silencer means made of a sound dampening board fitted against the wall of an opening in a wall structure or the like, as well as a flow control means.
Such a valve is prior known from Finnish Patent 70294, wherein the valve is designed as filter cassette, each end of which is provided with filter elements and be¬ tween filter elements there are noise pick-ups, said filter elements and noise pick-ups being resiliently and removably mounted at a distance from each other. A drawback in this structure is the small size of fil¬ ter elements as they are plate-shaped or flat pieces fitted crosswise relative to the opening. In addition, the replacement of these filter elements is quite troublesome.
An object of the invention is to provide a replacement air valve, wherein the filter surface of an air filter is as large as possible and, in addition to that, the replacement of a filter can be readily effected without any tools at all. Furthermore, the valve must reduce the noise coming in along with air and also offer a possibility of controlling exactly the rate of through- flowing air.
According to the invention, this object has been carried out in a manner that in front of the opening to the wall is fastened a mounting flange having a hole there¬ in aligned with the opening, that the air filter is a tubular, fastening flange fitted filter adapted to be inserted through the mounting flange hole into an open¬ ing in a wall structure or the like and to- be removably fastened by its fastening flange to the mounting flange whereby, with the filter secured in position, the actual filter section of the filter is spaced from said sound dampening board, and that the mounting flange is remov¬ ably fitted with a flow control means.
One preferred embodiment of the invention is carried out in a manner that the mounting flange is a substan¬ tially flat element provided with holes or recesses for fastening the mounting flange with screws or the like to a wall, clamping means for fastening a filter as well as clamping means for fastening an adjusting piece and/or a flow control means.
Yet another preferred embodiment of the invention is designed in a manner that the air filter carries a separate, fastening flange fitted body section, which is removably fitted with the actual filter section, or the air filter is designed as a disposable filter car¬ tridge replaceable as a whole. The filter section pre¬ ferably comprises a tube made of a filter fabric and- sealed at one end.
The invention will now be described in more detail with reference made to the accompanying drawing, in which
fig. 1 shows a longitudinal section of a replacement air valve of the invention fitted in an opening made in a wall structure.
Fig. 2 shows a front view of a replacement air valve of the invention with an adjusting piece removed. Fig. 3 shows a front view of an adjusting piece.
Fig. 4 shows a longitudinal section similar to fig. 1 of a replacement air valve according to one em¬ bodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows schematically a replacement air valve of the invention in a longitudinal section. The valve is fitted in an opening 2 made in a wall structure desig¬ nated with reference numeral 1 , which opening may be an existing ventilation port extending through the wall or an opening made just for this purpose.
The outer surface 3 of wall structure 1 is provided with a rain grate 4 covering said opening 2 and, re¬ spectively, the inner surface 5 of wall structure 1 is fitted with a mounting flange 6 aligned with opening 2 and fastened e.g. with screws 13. The walls of opening 2 are preferably covered with a sound dampening board 7 over the entire section extending between rain grate 4 and mounting flange 6.
The structure of sound dampening board 7 is preferably such that it comprises a resilient layer conforming closely to the wall of opening 2, a vapour barrier layer and a sound insulation layer. Board 7 can be designed as a tube which is fitted in opening 2 after cutting. Naturally, board 7 can also be designed so as to con¬ form precisely to opening 2.
In addition to an air filter 9, said mounting flange 6 is further fitted with an adjusting piece 11, covering said flange entirely and carrying in turn a regulator 12, which in the example of fig. 1 is an adjustable grate. As a regulator it is also possible to use other manually adjustable valves as well or, for example, a thermostatic valve which automatically controls the flow rate according to temperature differences. A fan can also be used as a regulator and/or a flow booster.
The mounting flange 6 is a substantially flat element provided with holes or recesses for fastening the mount¬ ing flange to wall 1 by means of screws 13 or the like. Furthermore, it is provided with clamping means 16 for fastening a filter and clamping means 19 for fastening adjusting piece 11 and/or flow rate regulator 12.
The mounting flange 6 is provided with two headed clamp¬ ing pins 16 disposed symmetrically relative to a hole 8 for fastening an air filter 9 by means of two grooves
14 made in its flange 10 and disposed symmetrically relative to centre axis as well as by means of its con¬ necting hole 15, said groove 14 being narrower than the head of pin 16 and, respectively, the diameter of hole
15 being greater than that of the head of pin 16.
When inserting air filter 9 through hole 8 of mounting flange 6 in opening 2, the heads of pins 16 of mounting flange 6 work their way through holes 15 in mounting flange 10 of air filter 9 whereafter, by turning said mounting flange 10 by lugs 23, said pins 16 are forced into grooves 14 of mounting flange 10 to thus clamp air filter 9 in position.
For fastening the adjusting piece 11 , made of a box- shaped element, to mounting flange 6, said mounting flange 6 is provided with extensions 18 which protrude perpendicularly from its plane and are provided with holes 19 in which the respectively positioned pins 17 of adjusting piece 11 are engaged as said adjusting piece 11 is pushed on top of mounting flange 6.
The adjusting piece 11 is used for standardizing the various modes of fastening flow regulators 12, whereby various regulators 12 can be readily fastened to ad¬ justing piece 11 optionally in various ways. Thus, the fastening of adjusting piece 11 itself can always be effected in the same, e.g. above-described manner.
An air opening 20 made in adjusting piece 11 can either be positioned concentrically with hole 8 of mounting flange 6 or, alternatively, offset relative to hole 8 of mounting flange 6. In the latter case the purpose is to further silence the incoming noise, since sound waves in this case are forced to impinge to a sound¬ proofing material 21 placed in a duct between hole 8 of mounting flange 6 and air opening 20 of adjusting piece 11.
Adjusting piece 11 or flow control means or regulator 12 can be provided with a heater element (not shown), if desired, for draftless ventilation.
Fig. 4 illustrates a replacement air valve according to one preferred embodiment of the invention in a view similar to fig. 1. The identical or corresponding elements are designated with the same reference numerals as in figs. 1 - 3.
Also in this embodiment, a mounting flange 6 is fasten¬ ed to a wall e.g. with screws 13. A mounting flange 10 for air filter 9 is in this embodiment fastened by means of screws 25 or the like to adjusting piece 11 which in turn is secured e.g. by means of a convention¬ al snap joint 26 to mounting flange 6, as shown in fig. 4. Inside adjusting piece 11 is fitted e.g. by gluing a sealing ring 21 made of a sound-insulating material which compresses against mounting flange 6 as adjusting piece 11 is pressed in position.
In this embodiment, the mounting flange 10 for air fil¬ ter 9 is fitted with a cylindrical member 27 which in a per se known manner is provided with support members 28, made e.g. of coated steel wire and intended for air filter 9 sealed at one end, which filter, in order to increase the filter surface area, can be folded as shown in fig. 4 or some other suitable way. At its open end, said filter 9 is mounted on top of cylindrical member 27 and, in order to secure its position, it is possible to use a rubber ring or the like (not shown) .
In the solution shown in fig. 4, inside cylindrical member 27 is fitted a per se known a thermostatic regulator 30 which moves an adjustment plate 29 axial- ly relative to mounting flange 10 for controlling the air flow rate through the valve.
