Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a process for delivering grains of powder charged in an electrostatic charging arrangement by friction charging in curved elongated ducts made from electrically non-conducting material.
  • the main object of the present invention is firstly to provide a process of the above-mentioned kind which makes it possible to convey and deliver charged grains of powder effectively to a location a considerable distance from the delivery unit in order to reach into deeply disposed corners and other deep-lying parts of cupboards, girders, etc., for example, which it is desired to coat with charged powder, especially colouring powder, where at the same time it is desired that an even coating thickness also be obtained.
  • the said object is achieved by means of the process according to the present invention.
  • a further object of the invention is to provide an arrangement which may be used to carry out the process according to the invention.
  • the said further object is achieved by means of an arrangement according to the present invention.
  • Figure 2 shows the dispersion diagram of the charged powder without the use of the arrangement
  • Figure 3 shows the dispersion diagram of the powder when the arrangement is put into effect
  • Figure 4 shows an example of a spraying nozzle with which, the invention can be put into effect
  • Figure 5 shows the use of such a spraying nozzle for surface-coating a deeply profiled girder with powder.
  • powder preferably colouring powder which has been charged in a known way in an electrostatic charging arrangement 1 which comprises a plurality of curved ducts made of electrically non-conducting material, is supplied to a nozzle arrangement 2 according to the present invention which is connected to the charging arrangement 1 and preferably consists of a plurality of delivery pipes 3 which are able to revolve round swivel unions 4.
  • the said pipes can be set up in the desired position and are able to reach both the inside 5A, and the outside 5B of an object 5, such as a girder, box, cupboard, etc., which it is desired to coat with the charged powder.
  • a sleeve-type nozzle component 6 which is preferably screwed onto the pipe 3 so that it can be displaced along the latter over a specific dis- tance.
  • a number of air supply devices 8 are provided on the respective nozzle components 6, spaced at a distance from the powder supply outlet 7 of the said pipe 3 and the central part of the nozzle component 6.
  • the said devices 8 are formed by lance-like tubes which are fixed by one end 8A into a through-flow duct 9 in the nozzle component 6 so that they extend out from the nozzle component 6 substantially in the delivery direction of the powder.
  • the air supply outlets 10 of the said devices 8 are expediently located at a distance from the powder delivery outlets 7 of the respective nozzle components 6.
  • Supply hoses 11 for compressed air preferably air at a high pressure, for example at a pressure between 2 and 4 bar, can be connected by one of their respective ends 11A to a pressure source, for example a compressor, via an air supply line 13 connected via a manifold coupling 12 to a plurality of pipes 11, and by their opposite ends 11B to a close-fitting air throughflow duct 9.
  • two air supply devices 8 are disposed at substantially the same distance from the powder delivery outlet 7 and extend substantially mutually parallel. It is possible to connect the desired number of supply devices 8 in a desired pattern around the circumference of the nozzle component 6, for example by mounting them movably, for example so that they may be rotated relative to the nozzle component 6.
  • Figure 2 shows what the dispersion diagram 14 is like with a nozzle component 6 when spraying charged powder conveyed by air using a conventional nozzle component, i.e. the powder spreads out with a wide dispersion angle.
  • Figure 3 shows how the powder dispersion diagram 15 can be when the present invention is applied, i.e.
  • the powder 16 after being delivered from the powder delivery outlet 7 in the form of a cone, the powder 16 is influenced by compressed air 17 supplied by the air supply devices 8 and flowing out via the air supply outlets 10, to form a supporting stream at a higher pressure than that of the delivered stream of powder, which is entrained with an effect like that of an ejector within a narrower, guiding and supporting stream 18 with higher impulsion, i.e. an increase in the speed of the powder particles is achieved, together with control of the form of the cloud of powder 16.
  • the charge level of the powder 16 is substantially maintained throughout the entire delivery phase from the outlet 2, and the concentrated air-powder stream 18 can effectively deliver the charged powder to the desired location, even when this is a long distance away from the powder delivery outlet 7, for example in deep cupboards, boxes, or on a girder as shown in Figure 5.
  • a suitable material for the arrangement would be a plastic material.
  • an annular air supply slot extending round the powder delivery outlet at the desired distance therefrom, viewed from the side and in the delivery direction of the powder, could form the air supply outlet.
  • other pneumatic gaseous fluids could optionally also be used instead of air; for example, ionised air could be used.
