Abstract

Se proveen métodos para tratar animales no humanos neonatales y jóvenes que sufren de diarrea y/o síntomas de la misma, mediante administración a un animal que así lo necesita, de una composición de polímero de proantocianidina aislada a partir de Croton spp. o Calophyllum spp. En particular, los animales neonatales y jóvenes incluyen terneros, equinos jóvenes y camélidos jóvenes, los cuales frecuentemente sufren de diarrea de diversas etiologías, y la composición de polímero de proantocianidina administrada es aislada a partir de Croton lechleri. Se proveen además métodos para mejorar la ganancia de peso y/o para reducir la mortalidad en animales no humanos neonatales, mediante administración de la composición de polímero de proantocianidina. La composición, ya sea entérica o no entérica, puede estar en una forma soluble acuosa y puede ser administrada oralmente a los animales neonatales y jóvenes afectados. La invención también provee composiciones prebióticas de extractos botánicos de Croton spp. o de Calophyllum spp. útiles para promover una microbiota intestinal beneficiosa
