Be it known that 1, WILLIAM MENGE, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Dolgeville, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented a new, original, and ornamental Design for Shoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawin forming part thereof.

The gure of the drawing is a perspective of a shoe, made according to the original ornamental design, which I have invented, The design involves more particularly, the forming of what is termed the tongue in the upper of a shoe, in the form of a shield, of a material of a different color from that of the vamp, with a scalloped border surrounding it. This, and the ornamental border around the opening of the shoe define very effectively the shield, and produces an attractive efiect.

The outlines of the shield are of the conventional heraldic form, and in the center thereof an ornament is set, as shown.
