UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
FREDERICK SEARLE, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO LORING COES & COMPANY, INCORPORATED, OF WORCESTER, MASSA- CHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
DESIGN FOR A WRENCH MEMBER.
SIfEGIFIGATION forming part of Design No. 35,261, dated November 5, 1901.
Application filed April 15, 1901. Serial No. 56,021. Terinof patent 14 years. I
To (tZZ whom it may concern.- I
Be it known that LEEEDERICK SEARLE,a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and original Design for a Wrench Member, of which the following, together with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My design relates to the configuration for that member which constitutes the main Wrench-bar with its fixed jaw-head and integrally-forrned shank portions, and of the class intended to be employed in what are known as screw-wrenches. Such member is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective View of a wrench member, showing mydesign. Fig. 2 is a front edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view; Fig. i, a cross-section at line W W; Fig. 5, a cross-section at line X X; Fig. 6 a cross-section at line Y Y, these several views illustratin g the configuration of the article at various positions thereon.
As shown in the drawings, the leading or material features of my design consist in the configuration ofthe wrench-bar member comprising the plain body portion A and the integral shank portion A, displayed as an approximately straight partially-offset extension, with the external form and appearance essentially as specified. The body portion A represents a rectangular cross-sectional shape with flat plain surfaces 2 and 3 at the front and rear edges, extending complete from the head 4 to ofisets 5 and 6 at about mid-length of the bar, and with plain fiat side surfaces (1 and at, extending from the head to the side offsets 7 and 9. The ofisets 5 and 6 are disposed perpendicular to the surfaces 2 and 3 and show as opposite full-shoulder faces of similar form at both the front and rear of the bar, the plain surface of the front edge 2 in particular extending directly down to and meeting the offset 5 in a right line at 8. The shank portion A is of less thickness than the plain body A, and its broader sides are represented by plain true surfaces 10 and 11, respectively, terminating at their upper limits in the offsets 7 and 9 and extending therefrom toward the extreme end 15 on straight lines. The ofiset 7 is of greater dimension than the offset 9, and a greater portion of the bulk of the bar-shank is disposed at one side of the central axis or median line 0, (indicated by the dotted line on Fig. 2,) thus showing as laterally-flatwise offset in respect to the plain part A. The edges at 12 and 13 from the 0&- sets 5 and 6 to near the lower end are transversely convex, as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6, and near the lower end 15 the edges are shaped with an inwardly-rounding curve, as at 14, and terminate below with a straight extension 16. Upon one side of the member there is presented, essentially, an inward curve or offset 17, that reduces the shank upon one side along the straight extension or near the end of the shank. The central axis of the lower end 15 coincides with the central axis of the body portion A, while that part of the shank portion A between the offsets 9 and 17 is disposed laterally ofiset, or with more of its bulk at one side than at'the other of the axial plain-or center line. The head 4 is of usual form, as shown.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The design for a wrench member substantially as shown and described.
Witness my hand this 13th day of April,
FREDERICK SEARLE. Witnesses:
