Description

AU 294i L PATE NTED mi f tats@ dfinit CHARLES PRATT, OF NEW YORK, N.
Design No. 3,359, dated February i), 1869.
DESIGN FOR THE TOP OF A SHEET-METAL CAN.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part o! the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES PRATT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and original Design for Tops of Sheet-Metal Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved design of the arrangement for strengthening the tops of sheet-metal cans.
The drawing represents a plan view of a sheet-metal top, when formed according to my improved design.
The outer edge, A, is bent downward in the usual manner, to form the joint for uniting lt to the body of the can; and immediately within the said edge, a deep groove, B, is formed.
The wall adiacent to the edge is-abrupt, while the other wall, O, is formed on a regular and less abrupt e. The said groove -juts sharply into the corner at D, and the inner wall is curved at three corners, while at the fourth it runs in an angular direction across the comer, leaving a large triangular space, E, wherein it is designed to form the opening for the insertion and Asuch points in tbe said plane G as they removal of the contents of the can.
A short distance within the said groove B, another groove, F, is made, corresponding in form to the inner Wall, C, of the lst groove; and within the latter groove is a plane space, G, which, as is also the plane space, H, between the grooves, depressed slightly below the surface of the outer edge, A.
Letters may be stamped into the bottom of' the groove F, for branding the cans.
A central depression, I, is formed in the plane G, wherein the handle is secured.
When the form of the handle is such that it is secured at two points distant from each other, I contemplate forming two depressions, instead of one, and at may be required.
These depressions assist to locate the handles properly when being secured.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The design for the tops of sheet-metal cans, herein set forth and shown.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 9th day of January, 1869.
OHAS. PRATT.
