UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. HADLEY, OF CHICOPEE FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE LAMB MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A SPROCKET-WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 30,1 17, dated January 31, 1899.
Application led January 6, 1899. Serial No 701,401- Term of patent 7 years.
To all whom it may concern.'
Beit known that I, GEORGE W. IIADLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicopee Falls, county of Hampden, State of Massachusetts, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Sprocket-XVheels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
Figurel shows one broad face of a sprocketwheel embodying my novel design. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2, Fig. l.
As shown in the gures, the sprocket-wheel involving my design consists of a plane circular plate A with ordinary peripheral teeth B and having a large portion of its body removed by cutting openings through it, so as to form a peculiar patternthe characteristic or material feature of my design. The plate has a large central circular opening C, and
between this and the periphery are annular sets of openings, those of each set being alike, but unlike those of any other set, and all being symmetrical with respect to certain radii. The openings D of the inner set are small, circular in form, and equally spaced on a circle concentric with the plate. The openings i E of the next set are large, symmetrical with outline slightly suggestive of acorns, with tips pointing radially outward. Those, F, of the next set are symmetrical with respect to radii passing through the centers of the openings D and are not unlike baseless urns, while the openin gs G of the last set are oblong and have their end lines semicircular arcs and their inner and outer lines, connecting the end lines, arcs of circles concentric with the plate. These last openings form an equally-spaced annular series, and are so placed that the alternate spaces between them are bisected by the radii which bisect the openings E, and the other like spaces are bisected by the bisectors of the openings D. Thus cutting away the plate leaves a network of metal whose parte are approximately equal in width and have all marginal lines circular arcs joined without angles. The central portion is suggestive of a star, and the whole pattern, is in fact, arabesque, suggesting rather than presenting the outlines of various known objects.
The design for a sprocket-wheel, substantially as shown and described.
GEORGE W. IIADLEY.
