Description

DESIGN.
J. O. GOODING DESK AND SEAT.
No. 25,735. Patented June 30, 1896.
INDIE? I GRAHAM WO'TQ-UNQWADMINGTOMDC UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSIAH t. GOODING, OF ST. LOUIS, 'MlHSOl'Rl.
DESIGN FOR A DESK AND SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 25,735, dated. June 30, 1896.
Application filed May 28, 1896, Serial No. 593,513. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosiAn (loeDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of illissourhhave invented and produced a new and original Design for a Desk. and Seat, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompan ying drawings, showing a part thereof.
Figure i represents a side view of a desk and seat embodying my design, and Fig. 2 is a view in perspective thereof.
The leading feature of my design consists in the configuration of the supporting-framework for both the desk and seat, and eompris ing in the first instance astrip of angle metal bent orshaped into an appro ximatelystraight inclined portion and an inwardly-curved portion, each portion being bent or curved ontward at its lower end to constitutea foot, and the two portions being intersected at their upper ends by an integral horizontal portion.
In the second instance the design comprises a seat-support bent into reverse curves and spread or bifurcated at the upper end where it intersects the under side of the seat, and being joined to or intersecting at its lower end with the adjacent leg of the desk-frame.
Another leading feature of my design is a side panel for the desk, which in height approximates about one-half the height of the desk-frame, and which is of corresponding contour and is flush at its edges with the edges of said frame, and which panel is embossed with a beading or molding and with a centerpiece in representation of a twig or branch with leaves and a single bud thereon.
In the drawings, A represents the desk as a whole, and B the seat. As viewed in side elevation at Fig. 1, the panel 1 constitutes an outer side facin g for the desk and is of height equal to the height of the body of the desk. The edges of the panel are flush with the edges of the main frame of the desk, and the obverse side of the panel is embossed with a continuous beading or molding 2 following the general contour of the panel and lying a suitable distance within the edges or border-i i nos 1 hereof and being joined or intersected by a cross beading or molding 3, subdividing the inclosure into an upper and lower part i and 5, respectivi'ily. The surface of the upper or smaller subdivision 4 is smoothor plain, while the center of the lower or larger subdivision 5 is embossed with a twig or branch 7, having leaves 8 thereon, and a single bud or bios som 9.
The main frame of the d OSli has the approximately straight and slightl vinclined leg 10, and the gradual inwardly-curved leg 11, each leg being bent outward to form a Foot 12, and the two being intersected or joined at the top by the integral horizontal portion 15. As before stated, the upright edges of the panel cor respond to these forms.
By studying the perspective view, Fig. 2, a better understanding will be had of the gen eral design, and wherein it will be observed that the top 16 and front panel 17 of the desk are set within the edges of the frame and side panel, and they are each straight and smooth or without ornamentation.
The seat ll is of general rectangulm: shape, and is flat and smoth and is now referred to in connection with its supporting-frame 20. This latter comprises the member Bl, bent for its length into several reverse or compound curves 22, and intersecting or joining with the lower part of the leg 10 of the deslcframe. At its upper end the said frame is divided or spread apart at .25, so as to come directly beneath the seat at both the inner and outer edges thereof at the corners 26 and 27.
What I. claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- The design for a desk and seat substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof. I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSIAH U. GOODING. lVitnesses:
GUSTAV MILLER, (nus. BOETTGER.
