DESIGN.
s. SPRYNGSTEEN.
CHURCH PEW.
Patented June 30 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DESIGN FOR A CHURCH-FEW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 20,868, dated June 30, 1891.
Application filed June 1, 1891. Serial No. 394,759. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SiLAs SPRINGSTEEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mani- .towoc, county of Manitowoc, and State of Visconsin, have invented and produced a certain new and original Design for Pews, which is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
This design is intended for pews or seats adapted to accommodate a number of persons, and therefore to be of considerable length relatively to the Width. It is distinguished by the horizontal outline of the back, being in the are of a circle whose radius is great relatively to the width of the seat, by the vertical outline of the back, comprising three curves substantially or approximately equal, and by the inclination of the back, whose general vertical directionthat is, the direction of a line constituting the chord of its middle curve, for example-is substantially such as to make an obtuse angle with the seat. The specific forms of the seat and seatarm and standard are non-distinctive.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of a pew embodying this design. Fig. 2 is a vertical section in a plane radial to the horizontal curvature of the back.
.A is the back, Whose horizontal curvature is seen in the plan view and whose vertical outline comprises the middle curve A, convex forward, and the upper curve A and the lower curve A each convex rearward and concave forward.
I claim- The design for a pew herein shown and described, characterized by the back having horizontal curvature in an arc concave forward and triple vertical curvature in three arcs successively blended, the middle are being convex forward and the extreme arcs concave forward, the whole back being inclined rearward, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, at l\lanitowoc, \Visconsin, this 20th day of May, 1891.
SILAS srnINes'rEEN.
