UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK P. JONES, OF MANITOWOC, WISCQNSIN.
"DESIGN FOR A SCHOOL-SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 20,452, dated January 6, 1891.
Application filed December 2, 1890. Serial No. 3736369. Term of patent years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK P. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manitowoc, county of Manitowoc, and State of Wisconsin, haveinventcd and produced a new and original Design for a School-Seat, which is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
This design relates to standards for seats and desks of the general type commonly known as school-seats.
The distinguishing features of the design are: The outline of the standard, which at the front and back is made by sweeping curves A and B, respectively, convex toward each other, and at the upper edge, commencing at the lower corner of the back, at the point 0, comprises a deep recess shaped like a capital U slightly inclined, or like a script letter V, the curve receding from the pointC as it descends, being therefore concave forward until the lowest point C is reached, then curving upward and extending forward with its concavity rearward to the point 0 where the on rvature isreversed, so that itis convex rearward, making that side of the U circumflex. At the forward corner of the standard is formed the circular boss or rosette D and extending rearward from it the elliptical boss E, which with respect to the rosette is approximately sectoral in form, with the corners rounded, so as to make it when viewed independent] y approximately elliptical, as stated,
the upward or rearwardly convex portion of the circumflex curve which forms the forward side of the U-shaped recess mentioned being part of the elliptical outline of said sectoral boss. The space between thebeadsformingthe outline of the standard is occupied by openwork, which constitutes a characteristic feature of the design, comprising about midway in the width of-the standard at the lower part a conventionalimitation of a cluster of twigs, the extreme twigs on both sides being developed divergent] y, one extending up on each side of the U shaped recess mentioned, the one which extends between said recess and the rear curved outline A constituting the stem of an expanding conventional leaf somewhat rudely toothed and strongly veined. The upper portion of the space is occupied by a conventional imitation of a vine-branch which is folded in serpentine form and terminates in a conventional leaf and has ofishoots at the more prominent curves of its serpentine outline in the form of conventional leaves and buds.
I claim- The design for a desk and seat standard herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two witnesses, at Manitowoc, Wisconsin, this 25th day of N ovember, 1890. FRANK P. JONES.
