DESIGN FOR A TOWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 19,437, dated November 19, 1889.
Application filed October 24, 1889. Serial No. 328,068- Term of patent 7 years.
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VHITCOMB It. JUDsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Towers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, and in which- Figure 1 represents in elevation the character of the design, while its form in cross section is shown in Fig. 2.
The leading feature of my design consists of a skeleton structure tapering from its base to its top, having external galleries at different heights and surmounted by a doublefilQl'Ol colonnade galleryand observatorysupportin g a cupola or dome.
The tower is of circular or cylindrical form in cross-section, and consists, essentially, of vertical ribs A, resting upon and extending from a suitable base B to and supporting a doubleticred gallery t, l),colonnade in style. An interior spiral or winding roadway E, extending from the base to the top, unites with the ribs A at suitable distances apart as a single structure, and appears in elevation through them. At. suitable distances apart external horizontal galleries F are provided, having the appearance of exterior bands around the structure, while at the top a col onnade-gallery C surlnounts the structure and supports a smaller eolonnade-gallery I) or observatory, which is capped by a dome G, all presenting to the eye the combined effect of great height and symmetry of proportion.
