Application filed November 30, 1888. Serial No. 292,386. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN IHLENBURG, a citizen of the United States, and a, resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and original Design for a Font of Combination Type Ornaments, of which the follow ing is a specification.
My design for a font of combination type ornaments is fully illustrated in the accompanying typograliihical impression, in which the various types, numbered from 1 to 32, are shown detached, together with an example to show how the various types may be combined to form an entirety.
The leading features of the design are the scrolls, and line and lace-work, these features predominating in the corners, and the groundwork consisting of smaller scrolls and crossbar lace and crackle work. The characters numbered from 1 to 18, inclusive, are characters with which the corner characters can be built up or increased in size, while the characters numbered 19 to 32 are corner characters proper. The groundwork of the characters numbered 1, 2, 14, 15, 21, 30, and 31 represents crackle-work, 21 being a plain corner, while 30 and 31 have ornamental corners representing cross-bars and diagonaLline work. The groundwork of the characters 3, 4, 16, 17, 22, and 27 represents interwoven bars, 22 being aplain corner, while 27 is an ornamental corner with draped angle: The groundwork of the characters numbered 5, 6, 11, 20, and
25 represents pebble-work, No. 20 being a plain corner, while 25 is an ornamental cornor having a central stem, from which radiates a series of scrolls bounded by a line border. The groundwork of the characters numbered '7, 8, 19, 29, and 32 is composed of a series of small scrolls, the character numbered 32 be ing a plain corner, while character 19 has a quarter-circle segment in the angle, While the angle of character 29 is filled byacobweb pattern and scrolls. The groundwork of the characters 9, 10, 18, 24,and 26 is an imitation of scale-work, 24 being a small corner, the angle of which has the representation of a spearhead passing through a ring. 26 is the same corner enlarged. The characters 12, 13, 23, and 28 represent lace-work, 23 being a small corner, while 28 is a larger corner, and represents a series of lace strips overlapping at the angles.
I claim The design for a font of combination type ornaments, substantially as described, and as shown in the accompanying typographical impression.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HERMAN IHLENBURG.
