Description
UNITED STATES CHARLES ID. IIEYER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ARTHUR M. AND ALSON E. BARNHART, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 17,668, dated August 30, 1887.
A pplicatien filed February 2l, ISST.
To (LZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that L CHARLES; E. HEYEE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, the county of Cool; and the State of Illinois, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing-Types, ef which the accompanying impression is an exact representation, and is a part of this specification.
The character of this design is a semi-ornate condensed mediumfaced type, and it comprises lewer-case letters, figures, points, do1- lar-mark, capitals, and character 85. The distinguishing feature is that the finishing or ornamenting stroke on all letters which admit of er have such stroke is made to turn inwardthat is, toward the stem, or inward with respect to the curve if the finishing stroke occurs en a curve. This feature is seen in the end of the top stroke of a, c, f, r, s, and z, in the intcrrogationpoint, top stroke of the dollar-mark, top and bottom strokes of figures 2 and 3, top stroke of G and 7, betteln stroke of 9, also in the finishing stroke of capital B, in the upper bow, upper terminus of C, upper and lower finishing terminal strokes of E, upper finishing stroke of F, lower terminus ef J and of L, detached finishing flourish of the Serial No, 22124 l2.
Terni of pair-utili YearsA bow of I and of It, upper terminus of S, both ornamental terminals of T on its cressstreke, 3o and beth the upper and the lower terminals ofZ.
A further feature of thc design is found in the fact that all such terminals are nlitcrcd or beveled, and that the beveled edge faces in- 35 ward in all cases. The purpose and effect of this feature is te make the page printed from this font appear compact, and this feature therefore is especially effective in connection with the condensed general character of the 4o design. The effect upon the eye as being an impression of compactness will`bc most felt if attention is directed to the letters such as capital F, E, T, or Z, or lowercase letters a, s, z, or figures 2, 3, 7.
I claim The design for a font of type herein shew l1 and described, which consists of condensed letter el medium face in which the finishing and ornamental strokes are deflected inward 5e and beveled at the end, such bevel also facing inward, substantially as illustrated.
CHARLES E. HEYER.
