DESIGN FOR A BADGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 16,813, dated July 20,1886.
A ppliraiiou filed January 26, I895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EnwAnn l-l'. S'ii-JtjiMANN,
of the city of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have originated and designed a Society Bat go or Regalia; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact descriptionthereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
My design relates to that class of badges or regalia used by lodges or similar bodies of secret societies.
The complete badge illustrated herein is one of that general character consisting of a top and bottom and a connecting central portion, said top and bottom portions being commonly formed of metal and the central connecting portion of ribbon.
The leading or distinguishing fentureof the design is the representation ot'a car-wheel in the upper portion. A secondary feature is the peculiar configuration of the lower portion, which is triangular in general outline, with one straight and two irregular sides, and which also usually hearsinsigniaof the society, which is shown as consisting of arepresentation of a coat of arms and a pair of clasped hands. Each of these portions has a space upon which the initial letters of the society may be affixed or impressed. The central or connecting portion should have a space thereon adapted to receive the name, number, and location of the particular lodge or other body in which the badges are designed to be used. The upper portion, which contains the leading or distinguishing feature, is rectangular in general outline, the car-wheel intersecting its upperline, and has a segmental curve beneath it through Serial No. 154,057.

its lower line. The groundwork between the car-wheel and the lower line is the space upon which the initial letters of the society may be placed. To this whole badge ajewcl may be suspended, if desired, as shown; but such jewel is no part of. the general design.
Having thus fully described my said design, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The design for the upper portion of a so ciety badge or regalia herein described and shown, the same consisting of a field or ground rectangular in general outline having the representation of a car wheel intersecting its boundary line.
2. In a design for a badge, :1. lower portion consisting of a field or ground of a general triangular form, the upper side being straight and the other sides being irregular, as shown, and a pair of clasped hands and the insignia of the society embodied in a checker-work ground on said field, all substantially as shown and described.
3. The design for society badges or regalia herein described and shown, the same consisting of an upper portion consisting of a field or ground having the representation of a carwheel impressed thereon, a plain central or connecting portion, and a lower portion having a coat of arms and a pair of clasped hands impressed thereon.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixcd my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDVARD H. STEGMANN.
