To all whom it may concerrv:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK S. Suin- LEY, of New Bcdford, in the county of lhrislot and State of lifttssachiusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Designs for Glassware; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, It'itl'tllCl being had to the accompanying drawings. which form a part of this specification.

Hy invention relates to an improvenn-nt in designs for dishes and bowls; and it consists in a dish oi'regnlnr form, eithcrornl or round, and having inwardly-rccesscd or swelled portions at suitable distances apart, with curved surfaces betwct-n them. and upon which any ornamental pattern is worked. It also consists in a dish or article having inwardlycnrrcd portions atsuitable distances apart, between which are formed curved surfaces, the upper edges of the imvardly-curved portions and the curved surfaces being separated from each other by suitable recesses, so as to make the edge of the dish scalloped.

The accompanying illustration represents a dish embodying my invention.

A represents a dish or howl, which is here shown as being round at the top and curved toward the bottom. At suitable distances apart inwardly curved or rounded portions 15 are formed in the sides of the bowl or dish, and which cxtcnd from the top to the bottom. These inwardly-curved portions are on a section of a circle and tapering in width from the top of the bowl to the bottom, so as to conform to the taper of the dish. The upper edge of each in wardly-curvcd portion is rounding or pointed, as shown at (I, so as to he entircly separate from the other portions of the top edge of the dish or bowl. In between these roninded inward projections B are the wider rounding surfaces C, which are convex or slightly flattened on their outer sides, and which sectionsnlso taper illi width from the top ofthe dish to the bottom. Upon thescsnrfuces C are pressed, out, etched, engraved,colored,or enameled any suitable ornamental patterns which will give beauty and a finish to the dish. The upper edges of these portions Care also to project outward in a rounding form, and to extend above the tops of the inwardly-curved portions B. The upper edges of the portions B and 0, being entirely separated from; each other, as shown, form a scallop around the top edge of the dish, thereby adding a beauty and finish to it.

A bowl or dish constructed as above described, aud having the round inwardly swelled portions and convex portions between them, gives theprisms and figures which are formed in the convex surfaces a mirror-like effect without weakening the article or dish, as would be the case if the prism were cut into a. regular surface not having the recessed portion to receive the cutting.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- A design for a bowl or dish, consisting of the inwardly-swelled or circular-recessed portions ll and the convex surfaces 0 between them, the upper edge of the bowl or dish being scalloped, as shown and described.
