Trade Mark on Lead Pencils.
EBERHARD FABER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. Letters Patent for a. Design No. 110, dated October 8, 1861.
SPECIFICATION.
TO' ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known, that I, E. FABER, of No. 133 William street, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented or produced a new and original design for Printing or Stamping upon end Ornamenting Lend Pencils; and I do hereby deelare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in whichi I Figure 1 represents a pencil, with my design stamped upon it.
Figure 2 represents the same, by an enlarged view.
The object of my inrention is to ornament lead pencils, and also to forms. mark by which they may be readily distinguished from all other pencils, and bethereby known in the trade; and the invention or design consists in the combination of an American or national flag, with the word Union placed at its side.
The flag is composed of thirteen stripes and thirty-four stars, the former being emblematie'al of the original corn inct of thirteen States, and the latter representing the number of States in the Union.
The stufi, from which the flog is represented as unfurled to the breeze, is furnished on top with n sneer, and inclines towards the head or top of the pencil.
The word Union," which forms a part of my design, is placed on the righthnnd side of the flag, midway between the parallel sides of the pencil, and is composed of a. letter known in the trade as nonpnrcii Clarendon.
My design is intended to be embossed or imprinted, either plain or in gold or sliver, upon the encils themselves, near one end.
