Description

UNITED STATJFB PATENT @FFIQE.
FRANCIS J. COLLIER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
LABEL-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,205, dated October 2, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS J. COLLIER, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Label Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists of a metal casing for holding a label of paste-board or other I suitable material the said casing having retaining flanges, recesses and openings arranged substantially in the manner described hereafter so that the label may be eflectually retained within the holders, readily removed therefrom, reversed and reinserted therein, as hereafter fully explained.
In order to enable others to make and use my invention I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
On reference to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification; Figure l is a transverse section of my improved label holder; Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section showing the label in its proper position; Fig. 3 the same as Fig. 1 illustrating the manner of extracting the label from the holder; Fig. 4 the same as Figs. 2 and 3 without the label; Fig. 5 a plan view and Fig. 6 a view illustrating the application of my improvement to an ordinary mail bag.
,Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My improved label holder consists of a metallic case of which the line a represents the base, the latter having perforated ends Z2 and c of the form illustrated in Fig. 5 or of any other form which the nature of the object to which the holder has to be attached may suggest as the most convenient.
The sides and ends of the holder are secured to or form a part of the base a, the opposite sides being represented by the lines 0 and c Fig. 1 and the opposite ends by the lines d and (1 Figs. 2, 3 and 4.
Both the sides and the ends of the casing are turned down so as to form the flanges for retaining the label in its proper position, the turned down ends of the casing being represented by the lines 0 and 0 and the turned down sides by the lines 7 and f. The retaining end flanges e and e reach to within a suflicient distance from the base a to allow for the admission of a thin label of paste board or other suitable material repre sented in Figs. 2 and 3 by the red line 00. The lower edges of the side anges f and f are of the curved form represented in Figs. 2, 3 and at for an object which will be rendered apparent hereafter these flanges terminating near oneend of the holder at a point a short distance from the end flange 0 so as to leave openings or recesses 3 y, Fig. 5 through which the edges of the label are passed into the casing.
It will be observed that the base a has two circular openings at and n represented by dotted lines Fig. 5, the opening m being situated near the point where the side flanges f and f are curved upward and the opening a near the point where the label is passed into the holder and where the side flanges are again curved upward.
hen the label or card is in its proper position within the case it is held therein by the flanges so securely that it cannot be removed without adopting the following operation By passing a finger through the opening an and forcing the middle of the label up- Ward to an extent allowed by the curves of the side flanges f and 7" see Fig. 3 the end of the label is withdrawn from beneath the retaining flange c after which and while the finger still presses the middle of the card upward the end of the label previously retained by the flange e is bent up by passing a finger through the opening a of the base the end of the label being subsequently forced through the recesses y 3 after which it is readily withdrawn entirely from the casing.
The method of replacing the label Within the holder will be readily understood without further description.
lVIy improved label holder, although useful as an attachment to luggage generally, is especially applicable to mail bags and other packages which have to be constantly conveyed backward and forward between two points, as for instance, between Philadelphia and New York, in which case one card or label only is required, the name of one city being printed on one side and that I openings m and n arranged substantially as of the other city on the opposite side of the and for the purpose herein set forth.
card which can be readily reversed prior to In testimony whereof, I have signed my the return of the package from one city to name to this specification, in the presence of 5 the other. two subscribing Witnesses.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent FRANCIS COLLIER The Within described label holder having Witnesses: the end retaining flanges e and e the curved HENRY HOWSON, 10 side flanges f and f the recesses y y and CHARLES E. FOSTER.
