PATENT Darren,
MORAN, or DAVENPORT, IOWA.
COMBINED LABEL-HOLDER AND HANDLE FOR BOXES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 255,841, dated April 4, 1882.
Application filed January 11, 1882. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMES GROAK and EDWARD J. MORAN, citizens of the United States, residents of the city of Davenport, county of Scott, and State of Iowa, have in vented new and useful Improvements in a mbined Label-Holder and Handle for Boxes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it belongs to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
Figure 1 ofthe drawings represents a perspective of a box, showing the label or card holder and handle in place with the card inserted. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the box-handle label or card holder. Fig. 3 is a top view of the blank forming the box-handle label or card holder, and Fig. 4 is a perspective of the handle.
This invention has relation to means for facilitating the handling of boxes and marking their contents; and it consists in the construction and novel arran gemcnt of the metallic boxhandle having the under folded sides and terminal fastening-prongs; the metallic handle for boxes, in combination with the box, the handle having the under folded sides and terminal fastening-prongs; and in the offsets between the handle'loop and the end bearings of the handle, forming recesses with the box adapted to receive and hold atrapezoidal marking label or card, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,- the letter A designates any ordinary box, of'paper or thin wood.
B indicates the handle, which is made of sheet metal, being first stamped in the form of a blank, 0, having sides d, which are provided with end prongs, c. In forming the handle from this blank the sides d are turned under the main portion 9 of the blank and the strip is bent to form a central handle-loop, h, and at each end thereof are shallow offsets 7:, which form recesses with the box, beyond which is the end bearing, Z, of the handle-plate, from which the end prongs, e, are separated by deep notches 19 in the blank, these prongs being on the ends of the under-turned sides d, as shown in the drawings. The prongs e are turned at right angles to the general bearing-plane of the handie, and are designed to be passed through the wall ofthe box and turned down or clinched on the inside, thereby fastening the handle firmly to the box,and at the same time forming stops at the ends of the offsets k. By this construction recesses are formed with the box adapted to receive and hold labels or cards. These recesses are intended to be deep enough to receive the edge 12 of the marking label or card L, which is designed to be cut in trapezoidal form, or of such pattern that its sides shall be inclined outward from the bottom up, so that when the card is introduced into the handle its edges will bear'in the recesses and the card will be held up and against the wall of the box.
This handle is especially designed for storeboxes in which shoes or other goods are kept, and the card may be printed with suitableliues, dividing it into spaces, in which may be written or printed the size, style, cost, price, or other particulars relating to the goods contained in the box.
A nozzle for cans having radial tabs placed alternately under and over the edge of the hole in the disk or head, to which it is fitted by brazing, is not new; but this method of fastening the article differs from that by which our handle is fastened to the box, as is obvious, and no claim is made for it herein.
Having described this invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 15-
1. The metallic handle B for boxes, having the under folded sides, d, terminating in fastenin g-prongs 6, adapted to pass through the wall and be turned down on the inside of the box, and the bearing Z to fit against the outside of the box, substantially as specified and shown.
2. In combination with a box, the metallic handle B, having the under folded sides, 0?, end bearin gs, l, offsets k, forming recesses with the box at the ends of the handle-loops h, and terbel or card, L, the handle having the end bearminal fastening-prongs e, substantially as ings, l, and the terminal prong-fastenings e, [O specified. substantially asshcwn and described.
3. In combination with a box, the metallic JAMES OROAK.
