7 JMk/i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH SUTTER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DESIGN FOR A CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 12,993, dated June 20, 1882.
Application filed May 8,1882. Term of patent 14 years.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH SUTTER, of the city and State of New York, have invented or produced a Design for a Chair, of which the following is a specification.
This chair is provided with a base, arms, and a back, and the ornaments thereon are represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, showing the base and the back ornaments; and Fig. 2 is a side view, showing especially the arms.
The base is made with a border, a, cross-bar ornaments b in relief, a scroll-work border, 0, at the bottom, and an eagle in low relief, as atf. The sides of the base are ornamented in the same manner, only there is a star, 9, in the panel below the cross-bars b. The back of the base should be similarly ornamented.
The arms are composed of the scroll-shaped front pieces, g, with raised borders and a head at the upper end. The top pieces of the arms are curved, with raised bordersand cross-pieces, as at h, and there is a leaflet-support at It, and at the junction of the back leg and arm the border-pieces extend across each other and terminate with rounded ends, as at Z.
The chair-back is made with a frame of openwork strips 72 and cross-bar pieces 0, and the open-work at the top of the back is similar to curved pieces, crossing each other and inter laced, as represented.
At the top angles of the chair-back the openwork represents the strips as crossing each other and the ends rounding and projecting, as shown. There are cross-pieces atr in the otherwise open spaces at the top of the back.
I claim as my invention- 1. The design of the ornaments upon the chair-base, consisting of the raised borders and cross-pieces, substantially as set forth.
2. The design of the ornaments upon the chair-base,consisting of the raised borders, cross-pieces, and eagle in low relief, as set forth.
3. The design of the chair-arms, consisting in the outline shape represented and the borders, cross-pieces, and end pieces, as described and shown.
4. The design of the ornamental shape of the chair-back, consisting of the bars with intervening open-work, cross-bars, and projecting curved ends of the bars, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 4th day ofMay, A. D. 1882.
JOSEPH SUTTER.
