Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. STEARNS, OF BOSTON, MASSAOHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO ROXBURY OARPET COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR CARPET.
Specification forming part of Design No. l l,496, dated November 4, 1879; application filed August 1, 1879. [Term ofpatent 33; years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,`THoMAs J S'rEARNs, of Boston, in the county of Sufl'olk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and original Design for Oarpets, of wlich the following is a specifcation.
The nature of my design is fully slown in the accompanying photographic illustration, forming a part ot' this speoification.
The design consists of a groundwork of pure Grecian style, forincd in dil'erently-ornanented alternating squares 1 2, arranged in longitudinal and transve'se rows, and fioral designs resting on said groundwork.
The floral designs are natural and free-11 and, and are arranged to give the etfect of festoons or an irregular network of liowers, as shown. The heavier portions of the floral designs give almost continuous wave effects of festooned fiowers diagonally and longitudinally ot' the carpet.
Iiam aware of Design Patent No. 7,339, showing floral designs on a ground ornamented by rectangular and other figures. In said patent, however, the floral designs are stiff and of the conventional form, presenting a marked contrast to mine, wlicl are natural, and known as free-hand.77
Again, in said patent the ground is ornamented by squares, which are interlaced. and are, therefore, not independent of each other, while the squares, l 2, ornanenting the ground in my design are'entirely distinct from each other, so that the longitudinal and transverse rows in which they are arranged nay be readily followed by the eye, like the tiles in a tioor or pavement.
I claim- The design for a carpet having the Grecian groundwork formed of independent squares 1 2, and the free-hand fioral designs resting thereon, and arranged as shown and described.
In testimony whereofl have signed my nane to this specifcation, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 24th day or July, 187 9.
THOMAS J. STEARNS.
