UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOSEPH U. GEROW, OF BROOKLYN, NElV YORK.
DESIGN FOR WATCH-CHAIN ORNAMENTS.
Specification forming part of Design No. 11,481, dated November 4, 1879; application tiled June 30, 1879.
- [Ternrof patent years] To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH U. GEROW, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Design for Watch-Chain Ornaments and (Jase, of which the following is a specification.
This design consists in a cylindrical tube, a, with a ring, b, at one end and a hatchet-head, c, at the other end, as represented in enlarged size in the side view, Figure 1, and end view, Fig. 2, of the drawings.
The eye of the hatchet is cylindrical, with straight ends, so as to form a band around the endof the cylindrical handle, and the hammerhead of the hatchet is prismatic, with nearly parallel sides.
This design is highly ornamental, and the surfaces of the handle and hatchet are, by preference, polished.
The tube forms a handle to the hatchet and a case for a pencil or a toothpick, so that the watch-chain ornament becomes also useful.
The pencil and case are shown as extended by the dotted lines, to indicate that the appearance of the charm itself remains nnchan ged by the extension of the pencil.
This watch-chain ornament is adapted to hang by its ring from the watch-chain, and has a highly artistic appearance.
I am aware that a watch-chain charm has been made to resemble a hatchet; but the handle was not tubular, and the hatchet-head was a. different shape. Hence the appearance was not like my charm.
I claim as my invention The design ot'the watch-chain ornament consisting of a cylindrical handle and a hatchet with a cylindrical eye and a prismatic hammerhead, as described and represented.
Signed by me this 26th day of June, A. D. 1879.
JOSEPH U. GEROVV.
