Description

DFZQUJ I NG PAGE UNf-E'v'Q I LABLE DOCUMENT'NUMBER UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOSEPH B. KNOiVLES, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
DESIGN FOR SPOON AND FORK HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Design No. 11,473, dated October 28, 1879 application filed August 25, 1879;
[Term of patent 7 years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn B. KNowLns, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have originated and designed a Pattern for Ornamental Spoon and Fork Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front view of a spoon provided with my newly-designed handle, and Fig.2is a back View of the same.
In the drawings, A represents the bowl of the spoon, and B the handle. The front of the handle is ornamented with the new and original design having the peculiar general character of the ornaments used. in Persian shawls.
The design consists in a series of volutes or scrolls commencing at the narrow portion of the handle and increasing in size as the handle widens until the last and largest scroll nearly reaches the widest portion of the handle, and is surmounted by two parallel lines forming a portion of a circle, between which,
lines radiating from the center are traced, so as to represent an arched border.
The continuous stem-line of the design has volutes connected therewith on its opposite sides, the volutes gradually iucreasingin size from the narrow to .the wide portion of the handle.
A blank portion is left at the Widest part of the handle for the usual initials, and the narrowest portion of the handle is ornamented by an overlying leaf-pattern. The reverse side of the handle is ornamented so as to corre spond with the peculiar character of the front, as is shown in the drawings.
Having thus described my newly-originated design, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcnt A design for spoon or fork handles, consisting of a series of volutes or scrolls springing from opposite sides of an undulating stem-line, the volutes gradually increasing in size from the narrow to the wide part of the handle, and
surmounted by an arched border, substantially
