WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS M. REYNOLDS, OF KITTANNING, PENNSYLVANIA.
BROOlVI-G'UARD.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Kittanning, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania.have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Guards, of which the following 'is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a broom guard and the objects of the invention are to provide a broom with a novel device for preventing the broom straws from being broken apart or unduly injured when in use, and to provide a guard of the above type that is simple in construction, easy to apply, applicable to various types of brooms, and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a broom provided .with the guard. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same showing the guard as a hold-fast device for a dust rag, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of a mop equipped with the guard.
A guard in accordance with this invention includes a body-portion, an attaching member, and a spacing plate. The bodyportion is formed from a single piece of wire bent upon itself intermediate its ends to provide a pair of loops 2 which are coupled together by a straight connecting member l. The outer portion of each of said loops is disposed at right angles with respect to the inner portion thereof. When the body-portion is in position, the right angularly disposed portions of the loops engage the edges of the broom head 8. Each end portion of the wire is disposed vertically to provide an arm 3 with an angular portion at its lower end. The free terminus of each of said arms is bent at right angles to provide the prong 7 adapted to engage in the broom head. The arms 3 are spaced apart through the medium of a plate Specication of Letters Patent.

5 provided at each end with a pair of openings. The lower opening of each pair is indicated at t and the upper opening at 6. The arms 3 extend through the openings el to the rear side of the spacing plate 5 and they are then bent through the openings 6. The extending of the arms 8 through the openings of the plate 5 is had prior to the bending of the free termini of the arms to provide the prongs. One of the loops 2 supports the eyelet end 9 of an attaching member in the form of a rod l0, said rod having a hook shaped end l1 to engage in the other loop 2. The body-portion is positioned against one side of the broom head and the attaching member on the other side thereof when the guard is mounted upon the broom head 8 and when mounted in such position and with the prongs 7 engaging in the upper part of the broom, the straws of a broom can be compactly held by the bodyportion and the attaching member and prevented from spreading while the broom is 1n use.
A dusting rag or cloth 12 can be easily arranged upon the end of the broom and held in place by the guard, and when it is desired to use the guard in connection with a mop 13, the body-portion can be made of a less length.
It is thought that the utility of the guard will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there is one embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the const-ruction thereof is susceptible to such change as is permissible by the appended claim.
What I claim is A broom guard comprising a body-portion formed from a single length Vof wire bent upon itself intermediate its ends to provide a pair of loops and a connecting member for the loops, the outer portion of each of said loops being disposed at right angles with respect to the inner port-ion thereof and adapted to engage the edges of a broom head, each end portion of said wire being vertically disposed to provide an arm having an angular portion at its lower terminus, said arms projecting upwardly lfrom said loops, a Spacing plate provided with a pair of openings at each end through right angular portion of the other of said which extends one of said arms, each of loops. 1-0 said arms having its upper portion bentat n testimony whereof l aIX my signature right angles to provide a prong` adapted to n the presence of two witnesses.
' extend n a broom head, and an attaching FRANCIS M. REYNOLDS.
member pivotally connected to the right :Ln- 'Vitnesses: gular portion of one of said loops and pro- Gr. R. CRAWFORD, vided with a hook adapted to engage the VERNA D. DAUGHERTY.
