ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 5, 1911.
Patented July 18, 1911. Serial No. 619,044.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Kanon KOLEK, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Buffalo, inthe county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im*u provements in Envelops, of which the following is a specilication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to safety envelops, and the objects of my invention are, to provide an envelop that can be advantageously used for the transmission of valuable matter by inail and express, and to provide an envelop that cannot be surreptitiously opened without detection.
l attain the above objects by a simple construction that is durable and inexpensive to manufacture.
The invention will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a plan of the envelop open. Fig. 2 is a plan of the envelop closed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the envelop, and Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of the same.
An envelop in accordance with this invention is made of paper, paperoid or other durable material, and comprises a rectangular body 1 having end flaps 2 and 3, adapted to be folded upon the dash lines 4 onto the body 1. The end flap 2 has a central vertical slit or slot 5 and a longitudinal slit or slot 6, the slot 6 being located adjacent to the lower edge of the flap 2. The inner side of the flap 2, at a point to one side of the upper end of the slot 5, is gummed or provided with adhesive material 7.
The end flap 3 is cut away, as at 8, and slitted, as at 9, to form an L shaped tongue 10, and adjacent to the lower edge of the flap 3 there is a longitudinal slit or slot 11. The flap 3 is gummed or provided with adhesive material 12.
The upper edge of the body 1 has a top flap 13 adapted to be folded upon the dash line 14 onto the end flaps 2 and 3. The top Hap 13 has the outer edge thereof provided with an angularly disposed tongue 14, and this tongue and the edges of the flap 13 are gummed or provided with adhesive material 15. The flap 13 has a central longitudinal slit or slot 16 and the inner side of the flap,
at one end of slot 16, is gummed or provided with adhesive material 17.
The lower edge of the body 1 has a bottom flap 18, adapted to be folded upon the dash line 19 onto the end flaps 2 and 3, and
the edge of the top flap 13. The lower edge of the bottom flap 18 has an L shaped tongue 20, and this tongue and the edges of the flap 18 are gummled or provided with adhesive material 21.
The manner of folding and closing the flaps of the envelop is as followsz-After the Hap 2 has been folded upon the body 1, the adhesive material 12 of the flap 3 is moistened, also the outer side of the tongue 10. The flap 3 is then folded upon the body to overlap the flap 2, and when suicient pressure is brought to bear upon the flap 3 it adheres to the outer side of the flap 2, with the slots 6 and 11 registering. The moistened tongue 10 is then inserted in the vertical slot 5 and caused to adhere to the adhesive material 7. The adhesive material 15 `of the flap 13 is then moistened, together with the tongue 14. The flap is folded and caused to adhere to the outer sides of the flaps 2 and 3. The moistened tongue 14 is inserted through the registering slots 6 and 11 and caused to adhere to the adhesive material 22, carried by the flap 2 adjacent to the slot 6. Before further closing the envelop matter can be placed therein, and then the bottom flap 18 is moistened and folded to adhere to the flaps 2, 3 and 13. The tongue 20 is inserted in the slot 16 and caused to adhere to the adhesive material 17. l
What I claim is 2- An envelop comprising a body, end flaps carried thereby and adapted tobe folded upon said body with one of said flaps over lapping the other, said end flaps having longitudinal slots formed therein in proX- imityto one longitudinal edge thereof and adapted to register when the end flaps are folded upon said body, one of said end flaps having a vertical slot formed therein and the flap adjacent to said vertical slot gummed, the overlapping end flap being cut away and gummed, an L shaped tongue projecting from one side of the center of the overlapping end flap and adapted to enter the vertical slot of the other end Hap and adhere to the gummed portion thereof, a top flap carried by said body and having a longitudinal slot formed therein with said here to said top Hap, said bottom Hup being gummed to adhere to said end aps, Substantiully as described.
In testimony whereof I aiX my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
KAROL KOLEK.
top flap gummed adjacent to said slot, an inclined angle-shaped tongue projecting centrally from said top flap and adapted to enter the registering slots of said end flaps, said top flap and the tongue thereof being gunnned to adhere to said end flaps, a bottom flap carried by said body, and an L shaped tongue projecting from one side of itnessesz the center of said bottom flap and adapted S. C. FRANK, to enter the slot of said top flap and to ad- A. L. RUYAK.
