A. GIRARD.
LUG STRAP. APPLICATION I'LLBD MAY 25. 1910.
Patented July 18, 1911.
COLUMBIA FLANOGRAFH CCh, WASHINGTON. D. C.
ALBERT GIRAR-D, OF CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
LUG-STRAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 25, 1910.
Patented July 18, 1911.
Serial No. 563,392.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT GIRARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lug-Straps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in lug straps, more particularly to the lug straps for picker sticks of looms, the object of the invention being to provide a lug strap which will sustain the wear of constant use, which will be extremely strong and durable, and which will perfectly perform the functions for which a device of this kind is intended.
Heretofore, lug straps have been usually made by bending a piece of leather, the intermediate portion of the leather being quickly worn out by the constant pounding of the stick, and to overcome this objection, my invention is devised and will now be described in detail.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2, is a view in longitudinal section. Fig. 3, is a rear view, and Fig. 4, is a perspective view of the leather strap 4.
1, represents a picker stick, and 2 the bar for oscillating the same.
My improved lug strap comprises a metal band 3 of general U-shape, in which a leather strap 4 of general U-shape is provided. The metal strap 3 and the leather strap 4: are each provided with slots 5 for the reception of the bolts 6 for securing the same to the operating bar 2.
Metal strap 3 and leather strap 1 near their intermediate or bowed portions are provided with alined openings 7 for a bolt 8. This bolt 8 is passed through a plurality of blocks of leather 9, and is secured by a nut 10. The blocks of leather serve as a wearing surface against which the picker stick bears, and they sustain the entire wear of contact. As these blocks are tightly clamped in place to prevent any spreading of the leather, they will last for an indefinite period and render any change of lug straps a very infrequent occurrence.
The intermediate portion of strap 4: is made with an upwardly projecting tongue 11, having a slot 12 therein. Through this slot, a leather strip 13 is positioned and the ends of the strip are secured to the picker stick 1, by means of a screw 14. By this means the picker stick and the lug strap are held into operative relation with each other, and pounding of the picker stick against the blocks 9 is prevented.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my inven tion, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A lug strap comprising a metal strap of general U-shape, a leather strap of general U-shape within the metal strap, said leather strap at the bend therein having an integral upwardly projecting slotted tongue, leather blocks located in the bent portion of the leather strap, a bolt projected through registering openings in the metal strap, leather strap, and blocks, a nut secured on said bolt, and a strip projected through the slot in said tongue and constructed to be secured to a picker stick, substantially as described.
2. A lug strap comprising a metal strap of U-shaped form, a leather strap of similar shape within the metal strap, a leather block secured in the bent portion of the leather strap, an integral upwardly projecting tongue on said leather strap provided with a slot, said tongue being broadened at the base to extend substantially around the curved In testimony whereof I have signed my portion of the strap whereby bending of the name to this specification in the presence of tongue adjacent the metal strap and the two subscribing Witnesses.
block is reduced to a minimum, and a looped ALBERT GIRARD. strap extending through said slot and lVit-nesses:
adapted to be secured to a picker stick, sub- EDWARD F. CARR,
stantially as described. JOHN E. MODONQUGI-L Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents Washington, D. C.
