BUCKLE.
Application filed May 6, 1915. Serial no. 26,290.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST WV. PAnnL- Form, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to buckles or clasps for belts and similar articles.
The essential objects of my invention are to enable the belt to be readily adjusted by merely sliding one member relatively to the other; to insure a continuous and positive clamping action of the buckle upon the belt; to avoid the use of solder; and to attain the desired endsin a simple and inexpensive. structure.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and combinations of parts as fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a buckle embodying my invention, Figs. 2 and 3, top and bottom elevations of the same, Fig.4, a rear' elevation. Figs. 5 and 6, sections of the same on line w m of Fig. 4, showing the parts in open and clamped positions respec tively, and Fig. 7 a detail View of the clamp ing member.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views. I V
My device comprises a curved face plate A having rearwardly directed top and bottom flanges B. provided with spaced longitudinally disposed slots 6 near their rear margin. together with oppositely disposed perforations 1) intermediate the slots, and somewhat nearer the face plate than the slots. A slidable back plate C has lateral lugs or projections c registering in the slots, and slidable therein. Upon the end of the back plate is a loop D adapted to receive one end e of a belt E. The opposite end of the belt is represented by the reference character e. Centrally located in the plate C is a transverse slot 7. A bar G has rounded end portions or trunnions g mounted in the perforations Z) of the side plates. The bar G is substantially flat, as at g', and has extending therefrom at an 1 angle thereto a flange 9 A lug h'onthe plate 9 extends therefrom at an angle thereto, and at an angle to the flange or portion 9 The member h loosely registers in the slot f, so that when the plate C is reciprocated in one direction the clamping flange g tightly engages the end 6 of the belt against the rear surface of the faceplate as shown in Fig. 6, and when the plate is reciprocated in the opposite direction the member is elevated adjacent to or into contact with the inner face of the plate C thereby allow-ingthe belt end e free as shown in Fig.
Under normal conditions of wear the ten ,7
sion of the belt end engaging'theloop D causes the flange 9 to grip the opposite end of the belt.
greater the grip. It will be observed that Patented Nov. 2. 1915.
The greater the tension, the
6o passage through the buckle.
the entire structure comprises merely thin, metal parts capable of being bent up and pierced with little or no expense or labor. vVhat I claim is v 1. In a buckle or clasp, the combination of "a face plate, flanges on the plate, a clamping member rotatably mounted in the flanges, and a reciprocating member slidably mounted in the flanges for rotating the clamping member.
2. In a buckle or clasp, the combination-of afaoe plate, flanges on the plate provided With longitudinal slots. 'a back plate, lateral projections on the back plate loose in said slots, a bar'rotatably mounted in the flanges, a flange upon the bar extending toward the face plate, and a lug on the bar engaging the back plate.
3. In a buckle or clasp.the combination of acurved face plate, flanges on the plate ally mounted in the flanges intermediate the In testimony whereof I have affixed my slots, an inciined flange on the bar drected signature in presence of two Witnesses. toward the ace plate, a lug 0n the ar inclined in a direction opposite to the inclina- V ERNEST PADELFORD' tion of the flange and loosely registering in Witnesses:
the slot in the back plate, and a loop on the HORATIO E. BELLOWS,
back plate. CHARLES S. JENCKES.
bopies of this patent they be obtained for five cents each, by adfiressing the Cbmmission'er of Patents, Washington, D. C.
