SNOW-SHOE STRAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16 1911.
Application filed November 23, 1910. Serial No. 593,905.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS L. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mohawk, in the county of Keweenaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Snow-Shoe Strap; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful snow 'shoe, and the object of the invent on is to provide a device of this design in which there is involved improved features of construction.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 1s a plan view of the creeper or sandal embodying the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a view 1n side elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view upon line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 44 of Fig. 1, at right angles to the sectional view of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the base of the basket-like structure at the heel portion of the creeper or sandal.
Attention is directed to the accompanying drawings, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
1 denotes a basket-like structure adapted to embrace andfit the heel and the rear portion of the shoe. This basket-like structure consists of the base portion 2, upwardly from which the extensions 3 extend. These extensions are integrally connected to the base 2. Extending from one extension to the other and riveted thereto is the strap 1, which is adapted to embrace the ankle of the wearer, there being a suitable buckle 5, whereby the strap may be restricted or enlarged. Riveted to the base 2 of the basket like structure are the straps 6, the ends of which are provided with buckles 7. The rivets which connect the straps 6 with the base are formed with downwardly extending projections 8, which obviate to a certain extent the possibility of slipping. Adapted to connect with the buckles 7 are the straps 9, there being a plurality of apertures 10 in the straps 9 for cooperating with the tongues of the buckles 7, so as to adjust the positions between the basket-like structure and the toe portion of the creeper or sandal. Connecting the straps 9 is the strap 10, each end of which is provided with a loop 11. The loops 11 are designed to receive the strap 9, as shown in the plan view of the drawing.
The straps 9 extend forwardly of the creeper or sandal and are connected by rivets 12 to the rolled extensions 13 of the toe portion 1 1 of the creeper as'shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The extensions 13 are wider at the point where they are riveted to the straps 19 and 20. The rivets for connecting the extensions to the straps 19 and 20 are designated by the character 13 The purpose in making the extension 13- wider at these points, is to permit the straps 9 to pass through them. The straps 9 after passing through them and the straps 19 and 20, are partly extended about the member 15, and are riveted to the extensions 13. The extremities of the strap 9 are also rolled as shown. Extending through the rolled portions of the straps 9 and the rolled extensions of the toe portion of the creeper is the transversely disposed member 15. The transversely disposed member 15 may be adjusted with relation to the rolled portions by means of the nuts 16 (which are threaded upon the member 15), as will be clearly manifest. By adjusting the nuts 16 on the member 15 in one direction or the other, the toe portion of the creeper may be narrowed or enlarged, thus rendering the toe portion capable of fitting shoes of different sizes. The toe portion 141 of the creeper comprises the shield 17 having slits 18, through which the straps 19 and 20 extend. The straps 19 and 20 are provided with a buckle connection 21 in order that they may be adjusted with relation to one another so as to enlarge or reduce the size of the toe portion of the creeper. The straps 19 and 20 are riveted to the rolled extensions as shown in Fig. 3. The straps 19 and 20 and the rolled extensions are provided with openings 22, through which the straps 9 extend, after being turned into the rolled portions. It will be observed that the toe portion of the creeper or sandal may be enlarged by two methods, 1st by the means carried by the transversely disposed member 15, and 2nd by the straps 19 and 20.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a device as set forth, a toe portion comprising a shield having adjustably connected straps, including rolled extensions riveted to the straps; the extensions having straps riveted thereto, said first named straps and the extensions having openings through which the second named straps are passed, a transverse rod extending through the rolled extensions, and provided with threads, and nuts to engage the threads of the rods, one on each side of the rolled extensions, thus constituting means whereby the toe portion may be narrowed or widened.
2. In a snow shoe, a broad elongated snow surface engaging member having a forward transverse rod and provided with heel and toe engaging portions adjustably connected, the toe portion comprising a shield having slits, and including adjustably connected straps passing through the slits, the straps having extensions riveted thereto, the extensions having straps riveted to them, the first named straps and the extensions having openings through which the second named straps are passed; the extensions and the second named straps being rolled, the forward rod having threads, nuts engageable with the threads of the rods, one arranged on each side of the rolled extensions, where by the toe portion may be enlarged or re duced.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS L. SMITH.
