HOUGI-ITON & CO.,
OF SAME PLACE.
LUG-STRAP FOR LOOM PICKER-STICKS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 620,469, dated February 28, 1899.
Application tiled September 17, 1898. Serial No. 691,195. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. LYON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certures of the invention is applicable to lug' straps made of other material.
The object of my invention is to so construct the lug-strap thatvit will present a rounded bearing for the stick, said bearing presenting a hardened or compacted surface which will afford enduring resistance to the wearing action of the stick, the hardened or compacted surface in the case of a leather strap being the grain-surface of the leather. v
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional plan view of a lug-strap for pickersticks constructed in accordance with myinvention; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Ordinarily leather lug-straps consist simply of two pieces of leather glued or cemented together and bent into U- shape; but such lugstraps wear rapidly, owing to the action of the picker-stick upon the upper and lower edges of the same where said stick comes into contact with the strap at the bend or bow. Attempts have been made to overcome this objection by securing upon the inside of the strap at said bowed or bent end of the same a rounded block of leather, which will present a curved surface for the action of the stick, but this is also objectionable, because the constant blows of the stick upon this block tend to displace it and because it does not present a smooth hard wearing-surface to the stick. l
In carrying out my invention I secure together the flesh sides of the two leather strips 1 and 2 of which the lug-strap is composed, so that the grain-surfaces of the leather are presented on the inner and outer sides of the strap, and I secure between the two strips a filler-block 3, of leather or other available material of substantially pyramidal shape, this block occupying a position'at the bend or bow of the strap, as shown in the drawings, so as to cause the inner strip 2 to present at said bow or bend a vertically and laterally curved or convex face, as shown at e in Figs. l and 2, and I subject the strap to heavy pressure between suitable dies, so as to compress and compact the leather at the bow or bend of the strap, thereby hardening, smoothing, and polishing the grain-surface of the leather on the inner strip 2, so that the curved or convex bearin g 4 for the picker-stick will be well calculated to resist the wear of the stick and will thereby materially increase the term of usefulness of the strap. The interposed filling-block may also be used with advantage in that class of lug-straps which are composed of superposed layers of textile fabric or other material than leather.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. Alug-strap for the picker-stick of aloom, said lug-strap consisting of superposed strips secured together and bent into U form and having interposed between them, at the bend or bow, a pyramidal filler-block, whereby the inner strip presents, at such curve or bow, a convex or rounded bearing-face for the pickerstick, -substantially as specified.
2. A lug-strap for the picker-stick of a loom, said lug-strap consisting of two strips `of leather, secured together and bent into U form and having interposed between them, at the bend or bow, a pyramidal iiller-block, whereby the inner strip presents, at such curve or bow, a convex or rounded bearingface for the picker-stick, said bearing-face being composed of the grain-surface of the leather, substantially as specified.
3. A lug-strap for the picker-sticks of looms, 'said strap consisting of superposed strips secured together and bent into U form and having secured between them at the bend or bow a transverselycurved filler-block whereby the inner strip presents at such bend or bow, a convex .face serving as a bearing for the stick, said convex face being hardened or compacted by pressure, substantially as specified.
4. A lug-strap for the picker-sticks of looms, said strap consisting of two strips of leather secured together and bent into U form and hav- ICO ing secured between them at Lhebendor bow, In testimony whereof I have signed my a transversely-curved ller-bloek whereby name to this speciicaoion in the presence of Io the inner strip presents at such bend 0r boW two subscribing Witnesses. a convex face serving as a bearing for the r 5 stick, said convex face being composed of the CHARLES XV' L ON" grain-surface of the leather and being har- Vitnesses: dened or compacted by pressure, substan- JOS. II. KLEIN, tally as speeed. FRANK E. BEGHTOLD.
