Application filed May 9,
ToaZZ 20720122 it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fniunnuc-lt A. Jacons, a citizen of the United States, residing at. Killingly, in the county of l vindham and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lug Straps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 1
This invention relates to a lug strap, and the object of the invention is the construction of a simple and eliicient lug strap that includes certain specific means for increasing the life of the strap by making the device more durable and of such construction as will resist the rapid Wear of the strap, caused by the picker-stick.
With this and other objects in view, my'
invention comprises certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter descr bed, illus trated in the accompanying drawings, and more partichlarly pointed out in the appended claims.
in the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device constructed in accordance with the present invention, while Y Figure 2is a horizontal, sectional view of the same.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the plug. Referring to the drawings-by numerals, 1 designates the substantially U-shaped lug strap made preferably of a plurality of layers of material, such as canvas, or the like. Within the strap 1 I place a substantially lJ-shaped leather lining 2, which has its inner face beveled, at 3, to its outerends, so as to more efficiently direct the picker-stick 4 (dotted lines) against the plug 5.
he plug 5 is preferably madecf a plurality of layers of material, such as canvas, and it is concaved or curved, at 16, substantially parallel with the curvature of the closed end of the lug strap 1; in other words, theconcaved face 6 of the plug extends vertically so as to receive the picker-stick f. The advantage of this structure of the plug resides in the fact that the wearing of the plug by the picker-stick will start with picker-stick and will tend to wear down through the middle of the plug, whereas, with a plughaving a convex picker-stick engaging portion the tendency is to drive the pickeretick to one side or the other and 'bodiment of my 'of the the Serial No. 637,854.
wear out. the sides of the ll-shaped lug difl'erent structure and will tend to make the picker-stick run truer and straighter than other plugs known to the art.
Another advantage resides in the leather lining 2 which strengthens the lug strap and will glaze over after the picker-stick has run over it for a little While, so that the pickerstick will always be guided into the concave bend of the plug and will be kept away from the sides of the lug strap. It also will keep the picker-stick from wearing into the sides of the lug strap, if this Wear upon the plug develops to one side or the other, and this Way will preserve the life and usefulness of the lug strap.
A rivet '7 is employed, extending horizon" tally through the lug strap, leather li ing and plug to positively fasten the together and strengthening the same as it acts as a reinforcing element through the device. I also partly secure the parts of the device together by using adhesive material, or the like, in addition to the rivet 7.
While I have described the preferred eminvention, and have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates, during the extensive manufacture of the same and I, therefore, reserve the right to make such alterations or changes as shall fairly fall within the scope appended claims.
hat I claim is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a. device of the class described comprising a substantially U-shaped fabric lug strap, a substantially U-shaped leather lining within said lug strap, said lining provided on its inner face with beveled ends,-a fabric plug within said lining provided with a concaved picker-stick engaging face in parallelis nto the contour of the closed end of the lug strap, and a rivet extending transverselythrough the lug strap, leather lining and plug in spaced relation to the concaved face of the plug, substantially as shown and described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a de vice of the character described comprising a U-shaped lug strap formed of longitudinally extending vertically disposed layers of fabric, a lining for said lug strap formed of i ieeeee plug,
spaced reiution to plug.
and a fastener passing transversely through the lug strap,
lining and plug in the concaved face of the 1 In testimony whereofI hereunto afiix my signature.
FREDERICK A. JACOBS.
