Description
' Patented Feb.14, 1922.-
A iMu mum H UNlTED STATES.
ROBERT THOMAS POWERS, OF OXFORD, IIIASSACHUSETTS.
LUG STRAP.
Application filed April 8, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT T. Pownns, a citizen of the United States, residing at O1;- ford, in the county of Worcester and State of lltlassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lug Straps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in weaving machinery, and more particularly to lug straps used in connection with the same, the primary object of the invention being to provide means to preclude wear imposed upon the lug strap by the picker arm operating therethrough.
Another important object of the invention is to provide the lug strap with a detachable bunter which is readily detachable therefrom whereby a new hunter may be associated with the lug strap when the old one has become worn.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of the application and wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the detachable bunter.
Figure 3 is a vertical section through the lug strap illustrating the hunter in position.
Figure a isa vertical section through the lu strap.
*igure 5 is a horizontal section through the lug strap and hunter associated therewith.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary horizontal section through a modified form of hunter, and
Figure 7 is a fragmentary transverse section through the same.
Referring to the drawings, wherein is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the in vention, the numeral 1 designates my improved lug strap which consists of a pair of spaced arms 2 joined at one end by a rear wall 3 having its inner face concaved as most clearly'shown in Fig. 3. Intermediate the top and bottom edges of this rear wall and in the concaved inner face is provided a horizontally disposed groove 4: the ends of which are spaced from the sides of the lug strap. In the inner face of each arm 2, at a substantial distance from the rear wall 8, I provide a vertically disposed groove 5.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 14, 1922.
Serial no. 372,201.
As the lug strap is constructed from wood, fiber or and other suitable material, the arms thereof may flex to a certain extent to accommodate therebetween a hunter designated by the numeral (3. This bunteris formed from leather, fiber or the like and assumes theform of a block having outwardly convened ends 7, one of which is adapted to closely engage the inner face of the rear wall 3 and is provided with an outwardly extending rib S. This rib is of substantially the same dimensions as the groove l to fit therein when the hunter assumes its proper relation with the lug strap. Each side 9 of the bunter is equipped intermediate its ends with a vertically disposedrib 10 for reception in the grooves 5. provided in the arms of the lug strap. An outwardly extending shoulder 11 is provided upon the hunter at the top and bottom of each side 9 for the purpose of engaging over the-longitudinal edges of the lug strap arms 2. It is of course, obvious that these shoulders may be formed integral with the hunter as shown in Fig' 2, or may be secured to the hunter by means of rivets 12 as shown in Fig. 7.
The ribs 8 and 10 may also be formed as integral parts of the hunter or may be of a detachable nature. In the latter instance, the ends of the ribs are extended inwardly and embedded in the hunter.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that in order to assemble the bunter'with the lug strap it is necessary to slightly force the arms of the latter outwardly sufliciently to accommodate and engage opposite sides 9 of the bunter. It is then forced in between the arms 2 toward the rear end of the lug strap until the horizontal rib S is received in the horizontal groove l, the rear convex end 7 of the hunter engages the concaved inner surface of the rear wall 3and the vertical ribs 10 are seated in their respective grooves 5 in the arms 2. As the shoulders 11 engage and ride upon the longitudinal edges of the lug strap arms, vertical movement of the hunter is precluded. As the rib 8 engages the horizontal groove 4 in the rear wall. the hunter is also prevented from vertical movement. Longitudinal movement of the hunter with respect to the arms of the lug strap is prevented by the vertical ribs 10 engaging the grooves 5 in the arms of the lug strap. lVhen it is desired to remove the hunter after it has become damaged or worn from contact with the picker stick not shown, the arms of the lug strap are slightly separated sufliciently to permit the hunter being moved outwardly toward the free end of the arms 2. It is of course obvious that the lug strap may be connected with the sweep stick, not shown, in any desired manner.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have referenceto what might be considered to be the approved or preferred form of my desire it to be understood that I may make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope oi the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is f 1. The combination with a lug strap having depressions therein, of a detachable bunter, connected therewith and projections on said bunter to fit said depressions.
2. The combination with a lug strap having grooves extending angularly relative to invention. 1
' the purpose set forth.
4. The combination with a lug strap, of a dependable bunter, said bunter having a pair of spaced shoulders projecting laterally from each side thereof, each pair of shoulders being adapted to overlap and removably engage the upper and lower longitudinal edges of said strap, and means for vpreventing relative movement between the hunter and lug strap.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT THOMAS POWERS.
